Hello! I just bought this particular Xbox on the Friday, 1/9/2008 for the purposes of running Linux on it, this idea after seeing the site brought to my attention from that of a friend a week earlier. Later that day I tried making some CD-R(W) images up using the Slackware based ones. I got the classic complaint regarding that the unit has no idea what kind of disk I've inserted and I should please remove it. On Saturday 1/10/2008 I then bought a DVD maker from Staples, and promptly tried making a pair of DVD-R(W) disks up as well. Both the Slackware (actually Slax) and the Debian based one, 1.1.3, promptly triggered the exact same complaint message. The machine is wearing on his bottom a date of manufacturer of 3/24/2005 and this seems to agree with a table I discovered on the Friday with your site, 1.6 (manufactured beginning ~ May 2004) And since it was used of course the internal disk contained the usual idiotic items related to being used to play certain games which aren't related to this e-mail. So in closing does this mean I am technically out of luck? And that I should bring him back to GameStop and request a machine from the time period that indicates that there's no logical problem with what I would be doing? I have an xbox where the HD is starting to fail. All of the HD internal remap sectors are used up so I'm now getting read/write errors on the drive. I'm planning on swapping out the drive but I haven't been able to install the hacked files to allow me to read the eeprom. If mkfs.fatx could check for bad blocks just like the DOS command CHKDSK I might be able to use the drive. I have a few questions:
1. Would mapping out the bad clusters allow the xbox kernel to use the good clusters?
2. Does a bad block utility exist but I haven't seen the documentation?
3. Assuming the xbox-linux team would be able to implement the utility much faster than I, would anybody from the team care volunteer?
4. I'm willing to implement the functionality. I assume I could grab the bad block routines from the mkfs.fat source and merge them in. Would the team be willing to merge my changes into the source tree?
