You can. Just download one of the Xbox-enabled Linux distributions, burn
the image on a CD-RW or a DVD-R(W), and insert the disc when your
alternative dashboard is running.

How to upgrade dash to v5960 when Xebian has already been installed?

Hopefully someone can offer some advice... I installed Xebian on my
xbox a couple years, and haven't touched it much since.

Now I'd like to install XBMC, but to do so all the tutorials I found
have steps requiring installing NDURE and alternate dashes first.
Which requires upgrading my MS dash to v5960. Which I can't do after
having installed Xebian, as Live is not available anymore, and Halo 2
reports that I need to bring my xbox in for service when I try to
update the dash using that.

Can anyone advise as to how to upgrade the dash after installing Xebian???

Thanks for any help!

Xbox mod freezes and doesn't work

Hey,
I was trying to do the mecassult mod and when I start it nothing happens, the screen just freezes.  I'm using what I think it 1.3, but the firmware is not the right version (it was patched too high).... what can I do?

if you have access to the c / e  still i suggest you nuke both drives with a stock 5960 m$ dash, and re-do your install using the NDURE modification method.  If need be i can do this for you.

Re: How to upgrade dash to v5960 when Xebian has already been installed?

Maybe I am missing something here, but I do not see the necessity to
install NDURE in order to get XBMC to work. I used the Mechassault
exploit to install UnleashX dashboard and have a couple of Xboxs that
can be booted with Xebian or XBMC as selected through the dashboard menu.

Re: Xbox mod freezes and doesn't work

I seem to remember that there is an issue with using the correct size
Mechassault image for your USB key. Take a look at
http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Software_Method_HOWTO#Copying_the_MechInstaller_Files_on_a_USB_Memory_Stick
for more information. If this does not help, perhaps you can give some
more detail about the steps that you have accomplished and the one that
you make just before the Xbox freezes.

I followed the instructions here, and I have the image on my xbox already (via action replay) which also used images made for action replay

I am still not clear on what step is failing for you; I presume it is
when you try to load the saved game. I am familiar with the tutorial you
mentioned, but you could also try http://www.biline.ca/xbox_uxe.htm. I
have used this more recently and without issue.
