Re: ntop 2.2 Release Plan -- README!

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am writing with some prelimainary remarks about 2.1.55.

2.1.55 is a candidate successor to the very successfull 2.1.50. This
release was the most stable ntop I have seen.

1 Net
/24 LAN with < 50 Win 9x clients running MS apps from a local file
server and accessing corporate apps (Internet and J2EE) via a 128 kbps
WAN.

ntop collects data using an Intel Pro 10/100 (at 10 Mbps) from a
spanned port on a Cat switch.

ntop only captures data entering or leaving via the WAN

2 Ntop host (don't laugh)

NIC fxp driver to Intel Pro 10/100

 FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE

 166 - 233Mhz/32-64 MB - no other applications

3 Building Ntop

The release engineering of this product is simply superb; I'm expecting
it to make my lunch next.

Subject: [Ntop-dev] Problems building ntop on Solaris 2.7

Hi Friends,

When trying to build the latest cvs release under solaris 7 (gcc 3.2.1)
I get the below error during the make phase. I thought undefined
symbols were usually due to missing libs, but I've built and installed
libgd several times to no avail. Libgd.a is installed in /usr/local/lib.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Cooper

New ntop commit (author burton)

Update of /export/home/ntop/ntop
In directory jabber:/tmp/cvs-serv9991

Modified Files:
	globals-report.h globals-structtypes.h webInterface.c
Log Message:

Add a fallback (indicated in the report with a (?)) if the ip <-> country
mapping can't resolve an address. The fallback is the gTLD or ccTLD (e.g.
.org or .uk) which should map to a statsicons/xx.gif file.

This preserves the (2.1.55 and prior) behavior of ntop for those who do not
have/wish to use the p2c table.

Update of /export/home/ntop/ntop/plugins
In directory jabber:/tmp/cvs-serv10088/plugins

Modified Files:
	netflowPlugin.c rrdPlugin.c sflowPlugin.c
Log Message:

Add ntop memory failure trap...

1. Convert myGlobals.capturePackets from binary to tri-state.

As a binary, ntop either captured packets or was in the process of terminating.
Once it termed, the data was lost.

As a tri-state, the settings are RUN, STOPCAP and TERM.

STOPCAP keeps the ntop web server up - with a message "Packet capture stopped" at
the top and bottom. This allows the user to view configuration and traffic data
then kill ntop cleanly through the "shutdown" option.

The transition from RUN -> STOPCAP occurs if the ntop memory allocation routines
detect a failure (i.e. out of memory). Log messages are issued (1st time only).

2. As part of this change, a number of key c|m|re allocs were adjusted to fail more
softly. The goal is to give the STOPCAP enough time to take affect, not to make
   ntop more fault tollerant.

3. Note also that the rrd process keeps running through ONE more cycle, so that the
data from the prior cycle to the setting of STOPCAP is not lost.
