Traffic-Info for January

Hello everybody,

here some info about "the community that helps people to install and run
Linux":

Since I am doing stats (January 7th, 2006, about noon), there were 2414
visits to LinuxBasics.org (not counting search-engines and bots). (avg.
99 per day).

IMO, this is quite impressing.

Visitors came from:
.com, .net, Germany, United Kingdom, .org, Denmark, Portugal,
Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, France, Canada, Sweden, .edu, Switzerland,
Spain, Mexico, Romania, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Poland, Lebanon,
Finland, Belgium, Estonia, Pakistan, Peru, Russian Federation, Norway,
India, Czech Republic, Croatia, Greece, Austria, Argentina, .gov, New
Zealand

Visitor use the following OS:
Linux, Windows, Macintosh, Sun Solaris, BSD, Aix, OS/2 (!!!)

And they use the following browsers:
Firefox, MS Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Konqueror, Opera, Netscape,
Safari, Galeon, Dillo, "others"

The Mailing-list has 59 Members (one of which is a NNTP-relay called
Mane.org, so there might be more people reading). In January, there were
123 posts to the list.

Week 21 - Behind the scenes of E-Mail

Hello everybody,

another week and it is friday already...

This week, we will explore how e-mail work. All the steps from your PC
to the recipient.

Chapter 30 ( http://rute.2038bug.com/node33.html.gz ) is the place to
go. It has much very technical information that you will not need unless
you are setting up a mail-server. It is very interesting... :)

But most people will not set up a full SMTP-server. Todays distros do
the usual desktop-setup for you. But if you run a network, you might
consider setting up an IMAP-server on one machine that holds your mail,
so your INBOX is concise.
If anybody is interested, just post to the list and I can help out.

What you absolutely SHOULD read is the section "30.1.1 How mail works"
and "30.8 Real-Time Blocking List -- Combating Spam".

Like I said: If anybody is interested in running am IMAPd, just tell me.
The same is if somebody wants to try out his own private webserver. If
this is the case, we will cover this on the list.

Next week, we will cover 'booting'. If anybody has a nice description of
GRUB, please point me to it, since RUTE only covers LILO.

Thank you all,

Stefan

IRC channel #LBo reminder

IRC channel #LBo reminder

You are invited to join us for an irc chat on Freenode.
We will be discussing this week's chapter(s) of the RUTE book as specified on
http://linuxbasics.org/course/schedule

In addition to that, all topics related to Linux or LinuxBasics.org are
welcome. To round things off, sometimes we simply chat about life, the
universe and everything. It is a great pastime, and we get to know each other
better. When somebody with a 'linux-problem' comes along, the conversation
usually focuses on that quite quickly.

Official meeting time is:

Sunday at 2000 UTC
3 PM Eastern Standard, noon Pacific Standard
(4 PM Eastern Saving, 1 PM Pacific Saving)

You're welcome and encouraged to use the channel at other times as well.
The channel is open 24/7 and occupants come and go. IRC is a remarkably
effective and efficient way to troubleshoot many of the common problems
users have. Perhaps a post to the list stating the problem(s) and when you
will be on the channel for starters. Check out your specific distro's
#channel, usually a great source of support. Or just drop by and simply chew
the herring <g>

Use your IRC client to connect to
irc.debian.org port #6667
then /join #LBo

This is not really what you're looking for, but it has some nice GRUB
tricks.
