RSS via email

Here's another way to subscribe to the forums and get them delivered to
your email account.

http://www.sendmerss.com/

Haven't tried it myself. I use Akregator for my RSS feeds - but I don't
subscribe to the forums. Personally, I don't like forums - and here's
why:

subscribing to a daily digest of a listserv is effortless. Each day I
get the messages that have occurred. It is dead simple to scan through
the messages and read the ones that are relevant.

Navigating through a forum usually requires a lot of clicking to get
from message to message. The forums that I've visited are typically
very slow to respond to my clicks. It doesn't take very long for me to
lose patience.

I'm not arguing for this listserv to continue. There's no point to
continuing a listserv when the discussion has moved to a forum.

Mailing List Closing

Dear fellow LBo members and contributors from all around the globe,

The world of Linux is in constant evolution, and so is LBo's. Over the
years, the trend on the Net has been toward the use of forums rather
than mailing lists. We at LBo also have created a forum, on top of using
the mailing list and wiki as before. The forum gained more and more
popularity, and eventually drew most of the traffic from the e-mail list.

As a result, the most recent things are happening on the forum, and the
traffic on the e-mail list has dwindled to a trickle, then to a few rare
drops now and then.

So, in an effort to both keep things simple for the members we consider
it appropriate to fold the e-mail list, and concentrate the support to
LBo members and users on the Forum.

We wish to thank our faithful readers for all those years belonging and
contributing to the LBo e-mail list, and invite all the members to
regularly visit the forum. If we may point some particular sections of
interest, we recommend the ongoing Linux course
(http://linuxbasics.org/forum/index.php?board=2.0) and the Useful Linux
Links (http://linuxbasics.org/forum/index.php?board=9.0).

So, effective July 15th, there will be no more LBo e-mail list. You will
still be able to search the archives of the list for all the tips and
tricks and information available there, but there will be no more new
posts. All of the new posts will be in the Forum
(http://linuxbasics.org/forum/index.php?board=1.0). We warmly recommend
you to register there and stay in touch with us and, who knows,
contribute here and there where you can.

IRC channel #LBo reminder

IRC channel #LBo reminder

You are invited to join us for an irc chat on Freenode.

All topics related to Linux or LinuxBasics.org are
welcome. To round things off, sometimes we simply chat about life, the
universe and everything. It is a great pastime, and we get to know each other
better. When somebody with a 'linux-problem' comes along, the conversation
usually focuses on that quite quickly.

Official meeting time is:

Sunday at 2000 UTC
4 PM Eastern DST, 1 PM Pacific DST

You're welcome and encouraged to use the channel at other times as well.
The channel is open 24/7 and occupants come and go. IRC is a remarkably
effective and efficient way to troubleshoot many of the common problems
users have. Perhaps a post to the list stating the problem(s) and when you
will be on the channel for starters. Check out your specific distro's
#channel, usually a great source of support. Or just drop by and simply chew
the herring <g>

Use your IRC client to connect to
**irc.freenode.net** port #6667
then /join #LBo

Hi Alan,
Sorry, I'm not sure I can be of much help.
I just checked and I do have some spare time,
but I'm fresh out of any 'spare' inclination.
Could you give us some more info on your problem?
That is if you can find the time and inclination to do so....

heheheheh

sorry I just couldn't resist,
maybe it's just to early for this.

No posts

For the past couple of months I have been getting very limited post to the
list, I get the regularly weekly IRC Channel #LBO reminder post and the odd
post and that is it. I am assuming that the amount of traffic is still the
same on the list which means I am missing most of the posts.

I have checked spam settings on the web mail system and on my PC, neither of
them are picking up any linux basic e-mails. Any suggestion?

GUI libs

Hey guys,
I've been developing in the past a few applications of all kinds. I was
using libSDL and OpenGL. That's been a long while and I would need to get back
to it now. My current projects are rather simple and I would like your input as
to which library I should use to "fit" my style as much as possible.

The apps will feature only 2D graphics with lines being the most used
primitive. The rest will be text (not rotated) and images or filled rects. I
will need buttons, menus (with sub-menus maybe) and input fields. With this I
should be able to do anything.

For now, I'm focusing on something that works, it doesn't have to be pretty
or ultra-configurable and so on. However, my eyes are clearly attracted to a
neat display even if it's just a calendar or a list of info!

This is going to be programmed in C++ and the target platform is linux, but
it would be extremely cool to have this program compatible with windows and
hopefully mac too. I have a lot of experience with compatibility (why I had
chosen SDL+GL) so as long as the libs are compatible...

I've been thinking about Cairo+Pango but I haven't looked very deep into it.
I'm considering using SDL + another lib that would take care of the buttons
and stuff. Using OpenGL is not such a great idea and I'd rather use plain SDL
simply (just plug myself a neat line algo and that's it).

If I'm asking like this, it's because I haven't followed this sector of the
world for the past couple of years and I'm wondering about what's new, what has
grown up and so on!

Thank, Simon
