MEPIS Development - Release notes? Change Log? Known Issues? Bug tracking? Feature requests?

Hi,

Am I blind, or missing something, because I can't find any 'proper'
release notes, change logs or known issues for the MEPIS releases. I'm
particularly interested on what's been changed between 2004.06 and 3.3.

These files would really help us users to see what's new, what's changed
and what be should be aware of.

A known issues file could be updated as 'problems' problems are
spotted... there are several things that caught me by surprise when
upgrading from 2004.06 to 3.3 - the grub non-default issue, the
serial_cs.o module not being included in 2.6.10 etc etc... It would be
good to keep a track of these.

Also, is there an 'official' bug-tracking and feature request area, as
this development list is all I can find. I know a lot of people over at
the mepislovers.org forums would like to contribute to further help the
development of MEPIS!

Thanks again!

Rob.

New Kernel Image 2.4.29 from apt.mepis.org

Hi all,

last night my dial up machine finally finished downloading all the
upgrades from a standard 3.3 installation. Surprisingly, one of the
upgrades was a new 2.4.29 kernel-image from the mepis repository...!?!?!

A little scared, I decided since the kernel-image was from Mepis.org to
let it overwrite the existing image and do its recompilation of modules
etc...

After a reboot, it was a success - nothing broken etc... but no
noticeable differences.

So:

1. Does anyone one know what's in this new kernel?
2. Should I have let it overwrite the existing image?
3. This is great news for future upgrades surely, if MEPIS now includes
apt.mepis.org in the sources for kernel updates - it means it's possible
to get newly patched/modded custome MEPIS kernels from apt-get upgrade
rather than downloaded the new ISO of the latest MEPIS purely to get the
new kernel!

Someone tell me if I'm right or wrong here!

(and will there be a new 2.6.10 with a fix for my serial_cs.o modem
problem + others?)

Surely, this ought to be an announcement on the mepis.org site too!

Mozilla Fonts

Hi,

I hate the way Mozilla / Firefox don't use kde system setting fonts for
their UI... There used to be a tool in OS centre (I think) in 2004.06 to
match Mozilla fonts to desktop fonts, but I can't find it in 3.3. Is it
there, and if not, why has it been removed?

I've also read if you download the Linux Firefox installer from
mozilla.org then you don't have this problem? In which case it would be
a .deb packaging issue?

Thanks for your comments.

Re: mepis vs xyz

I forgot to add that I have a pile of CD-coasters that is about 6 inches tall
of other distros I tried via reading DistroWatch... I am embarassed to think
about counting those...

Re nvidia problem

In regards to your nvidia problem , check out dev
Mepis digest Vol 14 issue 26 and 30 if it seems the
same the workaround is there too. You probably wont
like it but its the only way i found to get 3D working
with my card .
there is a known problem with the 6629 nvidia
driver with some cards . My previous posts go into
detail about it .

When I tried to install Simply Mepis 3.3 and set up
to use the official nvidia driver it didn't work,
the gui looked bugged or was completely missing,
totally unusable. Tried to run with both kernels,
didn't work. Tried to install SimplyMepis 3.3 with
standard nv driver and afterwards install nvidia-glx,
but didn't work either. Didn't work on MepisPro2005
beta 4 either, and neither with SimplyMepis 2004-10
final either, which I had been using earlier and

Re: The USB problem - comparison Mepis and Kanotix

I've tried to put the lines from Kanotix in Mepis fstab but it doesn't help -
still no dynamic entry for the card reader so I can't mount it (as I can in
Kanotix). There is so many other advantages with Mepis so I wait for a fix or go
back to 2004.6.

Funny you should mention Kanotix, I installed it yesterday, it's the
first linux OS to make my tv card work. :)
I had to fix source list, no problem. Yes, it use a custom Kanotix
2.6.10 kernel. I boot SimplyMEPIS-2004.06, Win 2k Pro or Kanotix now. :)
I think Ross would like it, as it do auto mount.

The USB problem - comparison Mepis and Kanotix

Hi,

I tried Kanotix and my USB flascard reader works in Kanotix but not in Mepis.
It's the same kernel 2.6.10 but maybe with different patches.

The fstab in kanotix looks like this:

# /etc/fstab: filesystem table.
#
# filesystem mountpoint type options dump pass
/dev/hdb2 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1

proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /floppy vfat defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs devmode=0666 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 defaults,ro,users,noexec,noauto 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /cdrom1 iso9660 defaults,ro,users,noexec,noauto 0 0
/dev/dvd /dvd iso9660 defaults,ro,users,noexec,noauto 0 0
/dev/cdaudio /cdaudio iso9660 defaults,ro,users,noexec,noauto 0 0

Fix for k3b issue (kernel patch)

Submitted by cb9fl on Sun, 03/06/2005 - 05:47. Applications
After searching for a while I found this fix for a problem I was having with
k3b. Can someone please take a look at it and tell me what you think?

http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=110599420505734&w=2

Hello,

I use K3B with growisofs to burn DVDs. After boot I can burn a DVD as a
normal user. But only the first one. When I want to burn another one,
K3B complains that it is unable to prevent media removal. Then only root
can burn DVDs.
The bug is in the kernel in the function verify_command.
When a process opens the DVD recorder with O_RDONLY and issues a command
which is marked safe_for_write, this function is supposed to just return
-EPERM and do nothing more. However, there is a bug that causes the
command to be marked as CMD_WARNED. From now on no non-privileged
process is able to issue this command even if it correctly opens the
device with O_RDWR - because the command is no longer marked as
CMD_WRITE_SAFE.
A patch is attached.

Michal
