Because that would be a stupid name and no-one would know what it meant (the
current one causes enough confusion as it is). No, it's not the same for 4GB or
64GB kernels. All lowmem kernels have always supported max. 896MB of RAM.

[Bug 15740] [kernel] RESOLVED: 1GB kernel cannot detect more than 896MB RAM

------- Additional Comments From danny <at> mailmij.org 2005-05-01 01:39 -------
There is another reason: most the overhead created on a 1 GB system that uses
a 4GB kernel results in a system performance that is worse than with a 1 GB
kernel (so you get not enough performance out of the 128 MB extra mem). At
least, that is the story (i did not test it). Since very few people need all
the memory for programs (I have 640 MB and i never hit swap) the 1GB kernel is
the best kernel for 1 GB RAM.

However...recently a patch is floating around that gives you the full 1GB with
lowmem. I think we have this in multimedia kernel currently. I did not yet
investigate how well this is currently working, and what are the potential
problems with it.

In conclusion, IMHO this bug is valid in a broader sense. Perhaps upstream
needs to move to above patch (but since it has not, there is probably some
issue). But at the very least kernel needs to add the
896 MB in the description in order to prevent confusion. Please reopen.

Well, I was going to write that, but we now have an i686-64GB kernel as default
and an i586-1GB kernel as 'alternative' so you have to throw i586 vs. i686
optimizations into the mix as well and it just gets complicated. I'm not going
to re-open this, reporter may, but IMHO if we're going to fix the kernel
descriptions there should be a general bug for all the problems with 'em (there
are more serious things, like some of the descriptions actually being completely
wrong).

Not all KDE patch has been applied normally in the KDE package. So you may
expect this is a temporary issue.
If really you want an answer, do a bug report
