scanModem, Fedora Core

Hello,

I just scan my pci buses with scanModem. Please find attached is
the ModemData file.
      I have a 3COM US Robotics Mini-PCI 56K V.90 WinModem (Internal).
I afraid there is no linux driver support. Is there any other
alternatives that i can make it work?

1st time Mandrake modem installer

I need some serious help here... <grin!> Had a 3Com USR PCI Winmodem that I
think is "beyond" help and thereby useless in the land of Linux. Picked up
a Best Data 56K USB model for $20 at Office Max and it claims to be Linux
compatible. If it is then good, if not then back it goes.

It does come with Linux drivers and instructions but I don't understand
what to do with them... Thus my request for help.

This is all on Mandrake 10.0.

Questions first and I'll paste in the instructions below.

1. Does it matter where I copy the files from the CD to the Linux
partition? I have a book that tells me something about putting the files in
the /usr folder/. How about the /RPM folder?

2. Is Mandrake picky about upper vs lower case letter in the commands?

3. Terminal window. Do I need to tell the terminal window which folder I am
commanding? How do I change from the root folder to the right folder? I
have discovered I can open a folder (right click) and use "Open With". Then
choose the terminal program. How do I do it with text commands?

4. RPM's. Do I need to be in the RPM folder to extract a tar.gz with the
RPM command? I literally copied and pasted the command into the terminal
window from the Read Me doc and the command still did not work. I tried the
Make and Make Install commands and got a 100 errors so I was doing
something wrong there too.

5. Since I learned my computer skills with Windows (as in one of Bill's

Your internal modem is not detected because it is a "Winmodem" which
needs a special driver.
Follow the instructions below with the following data:
-Your modem is of type HSF
  -Your cpu is an i686
  -Your distribution is RedHat 9
  -your kernel is 2.4.20-8
Here is what you have to do, using those data which I prepared for you:

If you do not already know, find out in your ModemData.txt if your modem is of
type HSF or of type HCF.
In the following, HxF stands for the one to be used.
Note down your distribution, your processor, and your kernel (shown in the
 System Information section of ModemData.txt).
-Go to http://www.linuxant.com/drivers
-Find the HxF menu in the left part of the screen.
-Read README.
-Read INSTALLATION.
-Click DOWNLOAD.
-Accept conditions.
-Find text: "You can download HxF modem packages from the driver
download page." and click on that link.
-Since you have noted your distribution, your processor, and your kernel
(shown in the System Information section of ModemData.txt), identify the

Yes, according to your ModemData.txt you unfortunately have a 3Com model
1006 chipset which is not supported under Linux (Linux support from 3Com
US Robotics, identical, is very close to zero).
  See http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/resources.html#3com
  As to your question
> Is there any other alternatives that i can make it work?
sorry, but without a driver which does not exist you of course cannot
make it work. This assumes that "it" is your modem, not something else.

Thank you very much for your help! Sorry that this eMail is a long - I
spend a lot of time with tests and want to give you a exact description
what I've done - hopefully we'll find a solution! Just read the lines
beginning with an "*" - the rest ist output.

My questions are at the end of this eMail.

* Download intel-536ep-4.69.1.tgz

* extracting files with "tar -zxvf intel-536ep-4.69.1.tgz" (=> folder
intel-536EP-2.56.76.1)

* changing directory with "cd intel-536EP-2.56.76.1/"

* make clean

Re: Ubuntu Hoary: my modem work with Linuxant driver?

Andrea

First install the package linux-headers-2.6.10-5-386 from your install CD or
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/community/ConfigUbuntu5.04%20repositories
Also the kernel-kbuild package if it is not installed already
This will prepare your Ubuntu for compiling drivers

The Conexant modem drivers provide by Linuxant are needed.

Re: SuSE 9.3, 536ep (Creatix V9.x Polymedia DSP Fax Modem)

   Dear Klaus,
Yes this is a well known problem unfortunately still not solved.
The tarball distributed by Intel does not work for 2.6.11 kernels.
A patch was reported by Vedran:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/archive-fifth/msg00280.html
There is an error in the patch as you have seen.
I have written to Vedran asking him to fix it.
Independently, I have also forwarded the problem to the person at Intel
in charge of the driver.
Several people are stuck with that problem.
   No response has been received.
You seem to have substantial Linux experience, and you have the modem.
I do not. Let us try to work together if you like.
I propose to work on the patch and send you the patched file. You try
to use it, and hopefully we might converge.

                                            Jacques

Thanks jacques.
Guess nothing much can be done unless gettting a new compatible modem.
