[hsflinux-announce] New hsflinmodem-5.03.03.L2mbsibeta02060100 release

Hi,

A new experimental version of the Conexant HSF (softmodem) driver for
Linux is now available from

        http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv

Some critical bugs and portability issues have been fixed in this release.
Generic packages should now work with SMP and 2.5.x kernels.

Also, initial support for Conexant AC-Link modems on the
VIA MC97 controller (PCI device ID 1106:3068) has been added!
This should make owners of AMD-based VAIO notebooks happy.

We recommend that all users upgrade and send us feedback about any
remaining or new problems not listed in the updated 'BUGS' file.

The detailed list of changes is available below.

Cheers
Marc

Question re Lucent LT

I have a quick question regarding the Lucent LT WinModems (rev 2) of which I
am the proud owner :-)

On your website, I see a ton of drivers for this modem for all kinds of
different kernel versions. However, my kernel is not listed anywhere.
Could you please advise me on what action I should take next?

My kernel is 2.4.2-2 -- I am using Red Hat 7.1.

Thanks for your help,
Mike

Mandrake 8.2, pctel-0.9.2 "Unresolved symbols..." error from "make install"

Hi,
I'm having some trouble installing the pctel-0.9.2 drivers for my modem.
I'm new to linux, and I'm hoping you can help me out. Since I didn't
originally have the kernel sources in /usr/src/linux, I ran Mandrake's
"Software Manager" (rpmdrake) and installed the sources from the
installation CDs. In /usr/src/linux, I then ran "make mrproper", "make
oldconfig", and "make dep" without any problems. Then, when I first
tried running "./configure --with-hal=pct789" I got the following errors:

checking for Linux kernel version >= 2.4.0... ./configure: test: too
many arguments
no
configure: error: You should have linux kernel >= 2.4.0 installed

I found a post on this mailing list (Matthew Saltzman, 5/8/02, "Re:
pctel-0.9.2 kernel version problem.") that recommended manually setting
KERNEL_VERSION in the configure script. I did this (I'm running
2.4.18-6mdk) and the configure script worked without errors. I then ran
"make" and it seemed to work fine, producing the following output:

Making all in src
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/barak/pctel-0.9.2/src'
Making all in module
make[2]: Entering directory `/home/barak/pctel-0.9.2/src/module'

frustrating, but common i'm sure.

i have a problem that i'm sure everyone has had. my modem just doesn't
respond. it's a pctel. i have the pctel-0.9.2 drivers installed. i can insert
the modules correctly; but when i send the moden ATZ i just get nothing back.
it just sits there. here's the tail /var/log/messages:
PCTel device[00:04.0](0x20) found "PCTel Inc HSP MicroModem 56 (rev 02)",
iobase=0xd400, irq=12.
PCTel driver version 0.9.2 [5.05c-4.27.215 (09-14-2001)] (PCT789) (2002-01-
31) with MANY_PORTS SHARE_IRQ SERIAL_PCI enabled.
PCTel driver built on [Linux 2.4.7-10custom i686 unknown "2.4.7-10custom <
132103>"] with gcc-2.96.
ttyS15 at 0xd400 (irq = 12) is a PCTel
PCTel initialization. Country code is 1.

this looks right to me. lspci tells me that the io address is indeed 0xd400
just as the irq is actually 12.
what could possibly be wrong?
thanks,
noah

Are you sure you are communicating with the correct device? A few lines
up in the log should tell you that the modem is detected at /dev/ttyS15
(or similar). Be sure to set your dialer to the listed device.

Re: Question re Lucent LT

You need to download the source code and compile it yourself. The process
isn't that difficult and it yields a driver tailored specifically to your
current kernel version. First try the ltmodem-6.xx series, as this
release is older, well tested, and hence much stabler. If the older
version fails to work for you, try to use the 8.xx version. If you unpack
the tarball (tar xzvf ltmodem-x.xx.tar.gz), cd into the directory (cd
ltmodem-x.xx) and execute "./build_rpm" from there, the install script
should take you through the process step by step.

If you need further help, please feel free to email me or anyone else here
on the ltmodem mailing list!

If there is not a binary package available for your kernel version -
you'll need to compile it. Go to http://www.heby.de/ltmodem and download
the latest version. There are lots of resources on that page to help you
compile/configure - I myself have a LT and it works beautifully for me.
Hope this helps. :)

Cheers,
Corr.

yeah. i mean, it's symlinked to /dev/modem and that's what i've been using.

lt winmodem

Hi there,
A few weeks ago I downloaded the latest version of the lucent lt modem
driver and did a
"make deb" on it which is working really well.
The other night I tried out a small net monitoring program called, I
think, either pppstatus or
iptraf, and it reports my connection speed as 33.6Kb/S. I'm interested
to know if this is correct as my modem in windows mode was capable of
about 40 - 48Kb/S from my present location.
I really just want to know if I have everything set up correctly. I
looked at my pppconfig file and I have it set up for the fastest speed
listed i.e. 115200.

Any comments appreciated
Thanks
Mike
