I think you will most likely have _no_ problem.

My past experience says you should avoid -O3 in the toolchain.
The last time I tried -O3 was several years ago, on i586, but I've
seen a few reports of problems with -O3 in the more recent past.
OTOH, your experience may turn out different.

If it works, there is no obvious reason to rebuild.

If you get strange errors later in chapter 6 (from 'ld' or 'as'),
you would need to rebuild chapter 6 (from the beginning, using the
programs in /tools). I don't think that is very likely.

 Good luck!

LFS 6.3: chapter 6.11. Binutils-2.17 problems

Hi all,

I tried to build binutils version 2.17 on a Linux system with an Athlon
2000MHz CPU.
I had the following problems, during building binutils:

1.)
during "make tooldir=/usr" I got the error:

The problem is that gcc is treating warnings as errors. This is
because of the -Werror option. If you eliminate this option the
program should compile.

Hi Frank,

yes I know that avoiding the option -Werror will cause no abortion.
But I hate to compile programs which can use not initialized variables.
The result can be harmless or it can be a bomb.

Therefore I prefer to use either binutils-2.18 or correct the 2 programs
with the uninitialized variables.
Do you think that building a LFS accoring to LFS book 6.3 with
binutils-2.18 instead of 2.17 id dangerous? Is there any experience?

BTW. the make phase of binutils-2.18 has worked fine.

dhcp download removed

Hey folks all is going pretty well I am in the chapter 7 of the lfs book,
but I need dhcp support so I have been looking at the blfs book on how to
configure it. I have a little bit of a problem dhcp-3.0.6 has been
removed from the download site. I was able to download version 4..0.1
however i do not know about compatibility. Also 3.0.6 client needs
net-tools-1..60 but a patch fixes this. but does anybody know if the 4.01
version needs a different version of net-tools or has any expereince
configuring dhcp for a laptop with ethernet and wireless. I still have to
configure wireless. but I need to know about dhcp versions and what works
otherwise I will just try it. Peace. Thanks

Hi, I did it exactly this way to prepare a system which is a cristal clean
LFS-6.3 which than is used for BLFS development. I cannot remember that
there were big issues.

You might want to setup the network bridging - useful for reaching your VMs...

(No subject)

OK guys I am done but I have on big problem which I really need help on.
My kernel panics on startup sayin

[ 13.472000] VFS: Cannot open root device "sda5 or unknown-block(0,0)
[ 13.472000] Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are
the available partitions:
[ 13.472000] 0300 4194302 hda driver : ide-cdrom
[ 13.472000] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs
on unknown-block(0,0)

I do not know what to do I have looked at some similar errors but cannot
really isolate a problem.

I have a lenovo/ibm t60 it has a scsi hardrive the partitions are as follows

/dev/sda2/ ext3

/dev/sda1 extended
/dev/sda5/ ext3 boot partition with lfs
/dev/sda6/ swap

sda 5 and 6 are in extended partition 1

I really do not know if this information is relevant but i noticed that
my boot partitions type is ext3 and it is using vfs I enabled vfs as a
module for compatibility. I have looked at a couple of forum
conversations. please I really appreciate any solutions or idea on what
to fix this problem. Thank you so much. Peace
