external harddrives w/ backup button

I was wondering if the button on external harddrives is useable on linux.  Been poking around, but does not seem to show up under any of the usual haunts.

also slightly curious what happens if I were to plug in both usb and esata...   I'll have to find a cable :)

I don't know what you're talking about, but if udev notices buttons
(e.g. the power switch on the front of the case) it usually shows up
as /dev/input/event3 (or some other number). Xorg usually picks up any
buttons pressed and passes the event on to your window manager. It's up
to you to decide what you want your window manager to do with the
event.

For example, I have a remote control for my digital TV card, I can
configure the events detected in openbox, the window manager I use (the
exact details of configuring openbox are probably not relevant if you
use another window manager). Hope that helps.

LXDE user? It certainly wasn't quite as light as I had thought it to be,
but still a far cry from the monstrosities that are Gnome and KDE.

openbox fan here, although that's only because fluxbox had no updates
until 1 week after I swtiched.

using lxpanel, but had to install a few other lx parts to get it
(don't actually use the menu). Also crashed occassionally on me.

Cool. Nice to know I'm not alone. :-) I'm still a Groan user most of the
time, but for a quick and simple desktop (58 packages), I use LXDE. Were
you able to get your .Xmodmap setup correctly per the output of xev for
you One Touch?

as far as xev is concerned, there is no event when I touch that button
(compounded by the fact that it does not appear under
/proc/bus/input/device)

What brand of drive is it? If Maxtor One Touch, then you need a special
module for it.

Simple HID, I suppose if that's not it, it would give you enough to go
on to make it work, that is if it is important enough to mess with.
