You are also aware there is a livecd project at lfs, correct? It has
its own mailing list - and though it doesn't yet give you step by step
instructions on making your own, it does currently have build scripts
that will automate the building of the current 'Official' livecd.

livecd AT linuxfromscratch.org is the ml

Jeremy, just a heads up for you. It is unreasonable for us to expect
someone to read the mailing list archives if they simply want to come
on to the chat list and ask a question.

That said, how is one to be "aware there is a livecd project at lfs"?
There's no mention of it on the web site, nor the mailing list page.

Perhaps some advertisements and some appropriate annotation on the
mailing list page would help folks realize the project even exists.

Which is why I've posted this in response. I suppose I shouldn't have
worded it quite the way I did.

Indeed. I have done much on the lfs-dev list to advertise it for now -
and I have worked on building up web content for it in my home folder,
and in the proposal lfs site I'm working on - I keep thinking we'll
present the new site again soon and/or port it over to belg for
development, so I've been stalling putting anything up on the current site.

If my previous post sounded offensive, my apologies, it really was meant
to be informative and I did not mean it to be critical.

Yes. I, for one, have certainly noticed all the off-topic discussion
about the livecd on the lfs-dev list. Don't take this the wrong way,
but discussion about a live-cd has nothing to do with the development
of the LFS book.

If anything, the discussions should have been taking place on -support
for folks that need help building LFS. I can't see how advertising
the livecd has anything to do with development of the book.

Considering that the cd is included in the printed book, and it has its
own page in the LFS Book (soon to be revised and expanded upon, I might
add), I'd hardly call it off-topic. However, I agree that there could
be better places for its disucssion - which is why the livecd ml was
created. And perhaps it is incorrect to recruit interest via lfs-dev -
if so, point taken.

All I know is that in my *very first* post to the LFS mailing lists,
which happened to be to lfs-dev when I asked a question to the
developers on why the CVS version of LFS was still using GCC-3.3.1
when all the other distro's were shipping GCC-3.3.3 in the standard
distribution, I got fucking

"Which list"

as the first reply to my question. (perhaps I worded my question
wrong, but still)

looking for includes

Hi all,

Trying to compile hal, i found i have installed several versions of
the gnome glib. ./configure always finds /usr/include, but what i want
is /opt/gnome-2.8/include. Neither PATH nor /etc/ld.so.conf is the
place to change the include path. Where is it done? Seems i have to
learn a lot more ...

TIA
Chris

That was uncalled for (such a response on the list). A lot of mailinglist
animosity has/had been going on that is in the progress of being weeded out
and dealt with in private.

off topic posts are the nature of mailinglists. Separate mailinglists try to
overcome it, but you can't kill all off-topic stuff. Live bootcd stuff sort
of belongs on lfs-dev since it has become part of the LFS book and is shipped
with the printed books, etc. Opinions on it are divided I suppose. Moot point
now too.

> as the first reply to my question. (perhaps I worded my question

No, not really to be honest. It had become a practice of sorts that was
regrettable (and if it it still happens it won't for much longer. See "dealt
with in private" comment above. I try to keep such things off the list
whenever is feasible).
