It's a combination of the words client and server. Each node on the

Actually, it's a *very* nice font - targetted at *small* sizes.
Since the gnome3 devs apparently target netbooks and such-like, I
can see why they want this. But, I still think a pointer to the
appropriate place in Xorg is the correct place for this. I'm
certainly going to be using it in my future desktop builds, even
those with 'minimal' gnome-3, because fonts which render at 6pt are
useful to me for another hobby (and I use abiword, which is too
stupid to use fontconfig!).

Qt3 and Qt4 are completely different libraries. To a certain extent there are some similarities, but the library names completely different.  If a program calls something like QString(), then the right library has to be linked in. I can't really see the same program using both a Qt3 and a Qt4 library.

Short answer for Trinity, no it can't use Qt4.

Thanks for the quick reply. So, the book is stuck with an old
poppler sine die ?

i get suh error:

gcc -Wmissing-prototypes -Wformat -I/usr/include/db4 -DUSE_TLS -DUSE_SASL_AUTH
-DDEF_SERVER_SASL_TYPE="dovecot" -DHAS_PCRE -g -O -I. -DLINUX2 -c dict_nis.c

dict_nis.c:42:27: fatal error: rpcsvc/ypclnt.h: No such file or directory

I have to note, that, for exapmle yotools-2.12 (on Slack64 13.37, cur) does not
have such include file, the only existing under rpcsvc is ypxfrd.x whatever it
means.

I have to sorry about not reseaching the subject beforehand - I found out glibc
2.14.1 dropped histrical NIS/RPC support so the question now is - whether it is
possible at all to build postfix on glibc-2.14.1 based system

gnome legacy

I've put a preview of the changes for moving the legacy gnome
packages at
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~ken/tmp/blfs-legacy-move/

The index now has a new chapter 35, 'Deprecated GNOME Packages'
with libraries that will continue, for a time, in the book after
gnome-3 has been merged in. Each of these packages includes an
explanatory Note.

I've also moved gnome-media into Audio Utilities (now chapter 41)
and put a comment on it, as well as pointing to volumecontrol (ugly,
gtk2, but works as a mixer) and gvolwheel (known to work well on
icewm, but *doesn't* contain mute/unmute functionality).

This preview contents are probably slightly out of date now, and I
haven't updated the details of the legacy/deprecated packages. This
preview is just for comment on wording, etc.

                          - + - + -

Perhaps I should also note that although I was building all of
these packages until last month (ostensibly, the libraries were for
abiword and gnumeric, as well as gnome-mixer), I've now discovered
that *for my use case* there is no difference in the functionality
or user interface of abiword or gnumeric if I admit them, merely a
reduction in the number of libraries linked in!

But, I don't have a full gnome-2 desktop and I'm in no hurry to
throw out what people *might* be relying on. I might suggest adding
gvolwheel and removing gnome-mixer in perhaps 3 months, once we can
all see how gnome-3 and pulse are doing. But at the moment, I've
only proved that gvolwheel works nicely on icewm (from the programs
menu, NOT from the startup script!), I'll be testing it on fluxbox
in a couple of days or so. And pavucontrol is perhaps a possible
package to consider - dunno, I didn't manage to get pulse working
last month, will suspend judgement until I've built a gnome-3
desktop.

2 issues in the book

Hi,

As we think it can help, the French translation team wishes to report
you 2 little issues in the book.

The lest important is in the changelog. Since the reorganization of
changelog, the changes between 2011, January and March have disappeared
completely. In French, we let them, but maybe it'd be a good thing to
have them in English too. Because now, it creates a gap of 2 months
without explanation between 2010 and 2011.

A slightly more important issue is in openoffice.xml. The lines 378-385
are repeated twice, as we read them in 398-404 too. Here's the contents:
>

A little fix seems to be useful.

Hope it helps to improve the quality of the book,

Thanks for all your work.

No, not really. We can build two different versions of poppler, one
with Qt3 and one with Qt4. It does get a little tricky though.

I ran into the same problem with qca (Qt Crypto Architecture). My
solution was to build a library called qca2.

For poppler, we could build a libpoppler-qt3 library and fix Trinity to
use it. Then we could build libpoppler-qt which uses Qt4 for everybody
else.

A quick check shows that the current poppler is version 0.18.2 and that
only supports Qt4. Specifically, -lQtGui -lQtXml -lQtCore.

For kdegraphics, we would need an older version. What I think we
should do is just update poppler for general use and I'll add a page to
Trinity with the older poppler. The change log says Qt3 was removed
with version 0.17, so I'd need to go back to at least version 0.16.

I'm going to move the 2011 changes to a .txt file and I'll get those
changes in there. Thanks for reporting.
