Is it safe to unsubscribe to this mailing list yet since there is no longer any furthering development on ck kernel patches?

es-2.6.24.patch

IIRC, I downloaded that and checked it out: it did not contain the staircase
deadline scheduling code at all, just some other patches.

I suppose since I've heard this whole story, it has gotten me kind of
interested in looking into the code and seeing what Con was fighting to so
hard to bring to us. There are three parts of me: 1) part of me is happy
for him, and hopes that he is enjoying the use of his time with his family
and never even calls this stress to mind, 2) part of me wishes to see him
take a hiatus and then come back guns-a-blazing and get back to the task
with renewed vim and vigor, 3) and part of me wants to learn this
programming language and pick up where he left off.

I think the whole thing was kind of eye-opening to me, since before I was
just a wide-eyed user looking to the pristine and perfect world of linux to
save us from the tyrannical M$. I guess things just aren't always that
black and white.

I also feel some solidarity with Con, since I have been learning Japanese
too. Oh well, sorry for the long post. Thanks for the kind and helpful
tips everyone! I suppose I'll wait and hope and see if anyone picks up this
scheduler again, and in the meantime take a whack at some BSD goodness while
I wait! ^_^

Thanks, but doesn't it not include the scheduler patch and just some of his other work only? Is there an
actual port of the scheduler to 2.6.24?

No, I haven't. So far I have only played seriously with Ubuntu and Debian. I installed Ubuntu Server on one of
our old defunct servers at work and am using it for a VMware test lab. I've also spun up a few VMs of Ubuntu.
But, as I do voice-over work, I have some interest in the toolset that comes with UbuntuStudio.

At home I plan to set up a central file-sharing server that I can save to and have configured to back itself up,
and also it would be nice to make other things like a firewall and VMware host. How familiar would BSD be to
someone like me who is just getting into *buntu?

Thanks!!

(sorry if this came out as a double-post!)

I apologize for perhaps asking a new-ish question, but I have just recently gotten on board the Linux
bandwagon and have only just heard of Mr. Kolivas' work, so please forgive my innocence.

I'm looking to set up a UbuntuStudio config to do some voice work, and I want to have the best performance that
I can. I also am considering running Ubuntu as a desktop/server on my main PC at home. I'm wondering if the
-ck patches that provide his scheduler functionality will still work on the latest distros. Any help is appreciated!

I just didn't know if any newer updates may have broken Con's scheduler or not.

Re: ck Digest, Vol 43, Issue 1

One thing I've noticed in the last official patch for the 2.6.22 kernel, is that some games don't work, and some other programs don't function properly or work at all. I'm sorry that I can't give a specific example, as I am having computer heating issues at the moment and can only use Windows of late with the help of SpeedFan...actually, here is one example:

Under Ubuntu 7.10, while running the patched kernel for 2.6.22, I cannot use the Restricted Drivers menu prompt to manage my ATI's drivers. It claims I need a ati-xxxx-xxxx.ck1.2.6.22 kernel module, which I cannot seem to find, therefore assuming no existence. Basically it's claiming I need a ck1-specific kernel module to install the ATI fglrx drivers through the menu prompt. I instead had to install the ATI drivers manually. Not a big deal, as I am comfortable enough with the Terminal, but it is a noteworthy 'bug'.

I applied the patch with good results to the recent Debian 2.6.23-1 i386 kernel.
Thanks
Why wouldn't Debian have that patch permanently?
