This sounds, as if there is another process using the sound device, probably
an sound daemon (such as artsd)

To find it out, try the following as root: lsof |grep dsp

Nevery had really success with soundmodem... Latency of the OSS alsa emulation
seems too slow for soundmodem at 9k6. 1k2 works fine though.

Thanks for the reply Luc.

The above command doesn't list any processes at all, so it looks like no
others are sharing thesound system. Also, I had stopped any services that I
thought might be related to the sound system but without any noticeable
effect; I still get the same error message.

Does anyone else use gMFSK under Mandrake 10.1 on a laptop?

You must have missed something. Some sound servers release the sound
system after n seconds of idle time.

Suggest you run up a bare-bones desktop without a sound server, e.g.
iceWM. Try re-starting the sound sytem:

su -c "service sound restart"

Mdk 10.0 with an Asus A2D notebook. I've never had any hassles with
gMFSK.

Knoppix and Soundmodem

Folks,

I just got the Knoppix 3.8 CD and I think it is a good idea but...when I try
to configure Soundmodem, it seems that there is no way to write the config
to /etc/ax25. This is true for many apps like F6FBB and HFTerm.

Is anyone aware of a method (other than installing the whole thing to hard
drive) to write these configs, I presume something like a symlink to a DOS
partition (I don't imagine it possible with NTFS).

Otherwise I would say the whole point of "Linux without installing Linux" is
lost. BTW I am a Linux newbie...so be gentle. :-)

RE: Knoppix and Soundmodem

To those who may care,

It was a dumb mistake, I found that as root (duh), you can write to
/etc/ax25 (I guess it is ramdisk)...cool! So it is possible to configure
apps like F6FBB and Soundmodem from the CD Knoppix.

If I try to use the persistent Knoppix image though, I get a segmentation
fault on boot.

Beta or Alpha (or in between), Knoppix seems to be an OK way to get more
people involved.

Special TNX to Harv and Dave! Oh...and the Knoppix guy.

Rose module and kernel 2.6.11

Hi,

I have noticed something strange with rose module and 2.6 kernel (at
least 2.6.10 and 2.6.11).

When loading rose module, it loads now automatically ax25 module. Good.

But, it also creates 9 interfaces from rose0 to rose9 with hardware
address 0000000 as seen with IP address or ifconfig.

Is this what rose module should do actually ?
With previous versions, loading rose module did not create any rose
interface. They were created by the application such as ROSE/FPAC.

Mandrake 10.1 crashes

I am running ax25/netrom for DXSpider, with 4 packet ports on 3 tncs via
serial ports. I am experiencing crashes where responses are very slugish if
at all. The only clue I see is in the *top* display on the CPU line.
Instead of the idle percentage being almost 100% it is 0.0% and the *si*
percentage is almost 100%. Can anyone tell me what that *si* figure is and
what it means. I cannot find any info anywhere.

What is your kernel version Tom?

(uname -r will tell you, among other ways.)
