Scilab 5.3

Hi science,

What's our 'official' status on SciLab?

Is anybody working on / following the progress with the 5.3 series?

What shall we do with bugs like this:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=390221

I remember trying to make scilab tree ready long time ago and it was a
terrible mess. I gave up when I had to unbundle various java packages.

Any ideas? Thanks!
Thomas

SAGE_LOCAL issues

Hi,

I just emerged sage from sage-on-gentoo under sabayon. When I try to start sage, I get many error messages,
which seem to point to SAGE_LOCAL being set to / instead
of /usr. I have attached the crash report.

Can anybody help me with this? Thanks.

Greg

Hi Greg,

At the end of sage-baselayout you have the following message:
einfo "${PN} has installed a file into /etc/env.d - if you"
einfo "have installed it for the very first time update your
environment"
         einfo "with:"
         einfo ""
         einfo "  env-update && source /etc/profile"
         einfo ""
einfo "or logoff and logon to your shell, otherwise Sage will fail to
start"

Did you do that before starting sage?
Failing that send us the output of
printenv | grep SAGE

Re: SAGE_LOCAL issues

You are right, thank you. Running env-update && source /etc/profile fixed the problem.

[sage-on-gentoo] sage-doc optional via "doc" USE flag?

  Hello!
I would like to suggest making the "sage-doc" package optional via
the "doc" USE flag for "sage" package.

  Regards,
    Vladimir

Hi Vladimir,

That look like a reasonable idea but we would have to change the way
we do things before doing that. We made the current decision some
time ago and it may be time to revisit it.
It is compulsory now because it installs the help system for sage.
The html and/or pdf files are just icing on the cake and you don't
have to install them. The html come in handy with the notebook however,
since you can access it directly.

If you don't install sage-doc you cannot ask sage for help on any
command using "?". For example if you do:
integrate?
you will get help on the syntax and some example. I think this is
a fundamental part of sage. If you disagree I am ready to hear about your
argument.

gentoo, prefix, sage, and job opportunities (for students in Germany)

Dear all,

I'm forwarding a call for applications for student jobs in Germany. The
coordinator project for the DFG priority program on algorithmic and
experimental methods in algebra, geometry and number theory
(http://www.computeralgebra.de) has "HiWi" jobs for students who are
interested in working on ebuilds for sage and gentoo prefix, as well as
the general integration of various scientific software packages.

If you are interested and currently studying at a German university,
preferably Kaiserslauten, Hannover, or Aachen, then please contact
Burcin Erocal <burcin <at> erocal.org>

Cheers,
Thomas
