Message from the founder of Resumark:

Greetings!

We've been working hard on this website to help people find jobs in this economy. We don't think it is fair for other websites to capitalize on people's resumes so we came up with an idea to share the money that employers pay for resumes with those who are looking for jobs. Doesn't this sound like the right thing to do? We appeal to you - please help us spread the word to others who can benefit from this website!
Thank you!

LiveCD installation not recognizing megaraid RAID set

I was trying to put gentoo on a dell poweredge 1950 quadcore xeon machine with three disks connected to a lsi PERC 5/i raid controller.  In the BIOS settings, all three disks were added to the controller for a RAID5 set up.  When I boot from LiveCD (2008 version with 2.6.24-r5 kernel) with dmraid='-ay' option, it came up not recognizing the RAID set, as I only saw "control" under /dev/mapper.  modprobe megaraid was okay, so was modprobe raid5.  Under /dev, I only saw sda, but there was no sdb, sdc.  So it looked like there was only one disk but the system did not recognize it as a raid set.  Booting from LiveCD with dmraid='-ay' doscsi didn't help.  I got the same result.  If I did a dmraid -ay in bash, I got "No RAID disks".  Could anyone point me to some instructions on how to make Gentoo recognize the PERC 5/i RAID controller?

I tried both 32bit and 64bit gentoo and results were the same.

lspci showed:
02:0e.0 RAID bus controller: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID controller 5

dmesg showed:

GLI Officially Deprecated

A few months ago the Gentoo Release engineering team changed the way
that releases are done to simplfy, automate, and provide more current
release media on a more regular basis. One of the consequences of
this is that the livecds are no-longer being released. This leaves
the installer with no place or function any longer. The installer
developers have all moved on to other projects, leaving GLI in an
unmaintained state. We can no-longer offer support for the 2008.0-r1
LiveCDs for x86 and amd64, though we expect it to work for
those that use it. During this project's five year existence, it has
been both a pride for Gentoo and a source of controversy. The Gentoo
Handbook is still the official installation method for Gentoo. For
those still seeking to do automated gentoo installs, please see the
Quickstart project at http://agaffney.org/quickstart.php

Question about Gentoo-Server

I am interested in Gentoo as a server OS, but I have not been able to
find much on exactly what the status is. Is there a recommended set of
packages? Does it actually have an installer? I also have some
suggestions for such an OS, based on my experience with Gentoo:

First, I would suggest that the emerge function be broken down into two
parts- a downloader/compiler and an installer- that way, a server can
compile the software that will be needed during its hours of service,
then can install the software during specific hours (a service window or
something). I would envision this as working similar to how etc-update
works, where it proides a queue of ready-to-install binaries, which can
be installed on a per-package basis. In a perfect world, any green,
yellow, or red-starred information would be browseable before installing
the package. Unfortunately, such a change would either require a new set
of arch'es or a parallel version of portage for the server version...
Any thoughts?

Installer release 0.6.6

Full release announcement:
The Gentoo Linux Installer team has released version 0.6.6 of the installer
on the 2008.0-r1 LiveCDs for x86 and amd64. The improvements in this release
are intended to improve the stability and simplicity of the installation
(yes, we know, at the expense of customizability). For those still wanting
to customize every detail, the ability to do a manual install will always
exist in Gentoo. Another alternative would be Quickstart for automated
installations, assuming you have a blank or pre-partitioned drive to work with.

Major Changes:
* Partitioning has been simplified and somewhat limited to improve stability.
All changes occur immediately rather than get queued up. Make note of that.
* The installer now *only* supports networkless installations. This was done
because we have spent a lot of time trying to make the release snapshot stable
and it is a good base upon which you can update things later if necessary.
Also the installs are faster this way, and don't require downloading or run
the risk of hitting broken tree issues.

As always with improvements, there are new bugs created to go along with them.
If you do encounter a bug, make sure to save your /tmp/installprofile.xml and
/var/log/installer.log.failed from the LiveCD right after the install fails.
File a bug at http://bugs.gentoo.org/. Select the "Gentoo Release Media" product
and the "Installer" component. If you can't find that, just use the following
link:

Quickstart 0.5 Released

I've just released Quickstart 0.5. I've been slacking terribly since the 0.4
release back on December 31, 2006. However, I have done a few things, and I
decided it was enough to justify doing another release. Here's the short list:

* added support for creating/mounting XFS and reiserfs3
* various fixes to the handling of extended/logical partitions
* add disk detection, so that you can use $disk0 instead of /dev/hda for more
   flexible install profiles
* automatically modify TIMEZONE in /etc/conf.d/clock
* full busybox compatibility
* allow specification of extra kernel commandline parameters
* added a fetcher for tftp:// URIs
* many bugs fixed. this is essentially a permanent fixture in this list for
   every release :P

If you would like more information, the project page for Quickstart is available
at <http://dev.gentoo.org/~agaffney/quickstart.php>.
