Linuxworld expo free code

Elitists,

Does anybody have a promotion code to get a free floor pass at
Linuxworld this week?

Thanks,

MUC temporarily suspends the LiMux project due to patent issues (kraut)

Style guidelines for Debian docs?

A perfectly reasonable thread has degenerated into an unbelieveably
stupid thread on debian-doc:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-doc/2004/08/msg00006.html

Surely somewhere in the Free/Open/Software/Content world someone has
established some sort of policy on sexist language that will serve to
keep Debian documentation in the mainstream of 21st century language
use?

These morons on debian-doc are an embarassment...

OK, all Debian documentation must be henceforth in Turkish:
http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Non-sexist_language#Turkish

(Well, maybe Hungarian, Tamil, or Korean, if people insist.)

Typical for Debian lists, though.

Some of the people that seem confused or opposed to the changes are not
native speakers. Many people that *are* native speakers are opposed as
well. I'm not sure what their reasoning is, besides not seeing it as a big
deal (though that doesn't really explain their strong opposition).

For the original starting point and the ensuing, erm, discussion, see:

Ah...

Clearly, if the Debian Project has a position/policy on this question,
it is well hidden; I can't find it. What I did find was the Gnome style
document, which holds:

"Avoid sexist language

"Pronoun constructions such as his/her or s/he do not exist. There is no
need to identify gender in your instructions."

http://developer.gnome.org/documents/style-guide/fundamentals-4.html#fundamentals-9

Interestingly enough, this document acknowledges that:

"Many of these guidelines are only applicable to English-language usage,
see the American Heritage Dictionary and the Chicago Manual of Style."

The Gnome document appears to be the sort of thing that might provide a
useful baseline for evolving a Debian Style Guide.

Got that this week too; in .au, no less.

Didn't have the cool address hack though.

Mind you, when I try to 'whois mcgroarty.net', my default whois server
is pretty friendly too:

Why do some people of the realm do these things?

I have been wondering what some people believe about the whys and
wherefores about some people becoming increasingly obsessed with
something annoying, as to make other around them just PUKE when they
bring up said things. Or respond to everything. Things like:
