Fallout of LWE - Things we need to follow up on

Hello guys

We made some contacts at the Expo which will help us extend some of
the goals of our with NYLXS. Cheif among these contacts was one I made
through the good graces of Don Marti with Sun Micro Systems and their
Open Office software initiative.

One of the things preventing Desktop adoption of Linux and free software
is the inadequacy of, not only office suites, but other necesary desktop
applications. In the case of Open Office, which is an open version of
Star Office, the software is probibly very usable, however this is not
enough. And Sun is working hard to get documentation of the suite
to be bundled with the products. But even this is not adequate, and
I'm not convinced that Sun can usher this produce through to the
market without some help. What's really needed is for the product
to be distributed with a few hundred working examples for macro and
programming templates which address real business application
problems.

This is my first call to Sun us at NYLXS to form a partnership in filling out
open office, so that it is every bit as usable as Microsoft Office. And THEN
we need to start training classes to train users on the system, as we
currently do for Perl, and web services.

In a word, this might be our first step in our Desktop initiative.

Re: Fallout of LWE - Things we need to follow up on

Quoting Karsten M. Self (kmself <at> ix.netcom.com):

[Open Office inherits from SO a severe lack of modularity, excessive
size (especially for developers), lack of information in support docs
about whether builds are so broken they aren't worth the epic download
times, non-functional bugtracking. OpenOffice.org cannot be reached
for feedback at any of the standard, expect addresses.]

Karsten, this is insightful enough that it deserves greater exposure.
Would you please write it up as either an article, a Web page, or both?

I empathise with the OpenOffice.org developer community. They've taken
useful steps to address this situation, starting from nothing. But
still, when I want answers to simple questions like "What options are
supported from the command line, and can I use OpenOffice that way as a
document converter, without X11?", I don't even know where to start.

Re: Fallout of LWE - Things we need to follow up on

It's not as important as getting templates for office workers into the distro

We're at a dead end without getting one of the office suites up to snuff in terms of usability.

OTOH, that site really sucks. Docs are thin, mailing lists, IMO, confusing,
and no

Download this latest stable release.

Mozilla suffers much the same problems

Here's some more, from the French Socialist Party:

"Dans le secteur du logiciel, il appartient aux pouvoirs
publics, en France et en Europe, de faire prévaloir les principes
d'interopérabilité et de droit à la compatibilité et de promouvoir
les standards ouverts, notamment dans l'administration et plus
largement dans le secteur public, comme dans le système éducatif."

  ...

"la brevetabilité du logiciel doit être refusée."

Not that I usually like the socialist party, but I couldn't agree more.

I guess it comes in handy to know French once in a while :-)
