debian package

How do I use the em8300 debian package? There's no kernel module in it,
just em8300setup, a couple of configuration files, and some
documentation. How do I get the kernel module? I could compile it
myself, but in that case, what's the point of this binary package?

Thanks

Hi,

You will have to compile the module yourself, which is often (and
unfortunately) a consequence of using out-of-tree kernel modules. However the
em8300 set of packages make this a reasonably automated and Debian-integrated
process.

The package you want for the modules source is em8300-source. Once you apt-get
install em8300-source you can use module-assistant (or you favourite
alternative method) to generate an em8300-modules package suitable for your
kernel and architecture (read /usr/share/doc/em8300-source/README.Debian for
instructions).

Hope that helps clear things up,
Brendon

Re: [PATCH] adv717x module code big reorganization -- please test and/or comment

Hi,

This patch was just committed.
Thanks to all 3 who gave it a try.
Ville, I shoulde definitely think about a way to merge (at least the
ADV717X part) of yor WSS patch.

Cheers,

Nicolas

That would be nice. But for the record, it's not really "my" WSS patch, I've
just maintained it so that it applies to current em8300 sources, which I'll
also look into doing against current CVS in a few days. AFAIK it's
originally written by Seppo Ingalsuo,
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.vdr/17095

However, in VDR use, the WSS stuff seems to put the picture (both OSD and
video) in a strange interlacing-like mode every now and then when the
signaling kicks in - I haven't been able to find out the exact case when it
does so. Switching channels (to some channel that invokes the signaling in
some particular way, not any channel) or resetting the card via VDR's OSD
fixes it. There's an image that illustrates the effect at

I'm not sure it's worth the effort (yet), as I'm planning more changes
for the adv717x driver.

Thanks for the pointer.

That really is strange. Any idea how often it happens on a given
channel? If it's around half the time, it might be that the adv717x chip
happens to be reset at a wrong time. Moreover, are you sure that it
happens more often with the WSS patch than without it?

Sorry for the late answer; I just committed a change that serves the
same purpose, although in a slightly different way.

Cheers,

Nicolas

how to compile the modules properly.

You must be building against the wrong kernel headers. I guess you're
using a linux kernel provided by your distro.

If I'm right, you should tell us whar distro you are using. Hopefully,
someone on this list knows that distro and will be able to help you.

Could be, but offhand I tend to think it's not that often. And the channel
definitely has something to do with it, for example I do remember
experiencing this more often on eg. Finnish MTV3 than the YLE channels. But
that could be because aspect ratio changes occur much more frequently on some
channels than others (eg. there are no commercials on the YLE ones, which are
the usual culprit). Will try to keep an eye on it more closely.

> Moreover, are you sure that it
> happens more often with the WSS patch than without it?

Absolutely. I don't think I've ever seen this effect without the WSS patch
(or with WSS disabled in the VDR plugin settings).
