wide video and low saturation in NTSC TV out

Hi,

Lately I am interested in moving a video project onto VHS,
so I want to use the TV out port of my Dxr3 card, but...

In NTSC mode, the video is twice the width of the TV screen,
and the colors are not saturated (so black looks gray, and
red looks pink). I've tried various combinations of module
parameters, and get the same results with the Creative Dxr3
card and the Hollywood+ card. The em8300 driver was from
CVS in fall of 2004, and my kernel is 2.6.9. Is there a known
bug? PAL works OK, but my VCR only knows NTSC.

With kernel 2.4.20, em8300-0.11.x, and the exact same
microcode, this problem did not occur.

If your answer is "try the newest version of em8300,"
then I will. But if one of you knows of this problem already,
I would like to hear about it.

Thank you.

Thomas

Re: wide video and low saturation in NTSC TV out

Oh, and, yes, it does the same thing with em8300-0.15.2.

bt865 module parameters

Hi,

I have written a dialog based bash sript (dxr3config.sh), which
simplifys the process of finding the appropriate module parameters for
a dxr3. The script shows a test image on the TV and if the image is
only black&white the user chooses the in the main menu of dxr3config
the item black&white...

You can find screenshots and downloads here:
http://free.pages.at/wicky4vdr/

But I need some more Informations for the bt865. Because I have only a
dxr3 with an adv717x onboard.

1. I found some common parameter sets for dxr3-cards with a adv717x
onboard, but non for the bt865. Should I integrate in dxr3config the
same module parameters sets for the em8300 module as for the dxr3
version with a adv717x on board?

2. For the dxr3-cards with a bt865 on board there exists the option

bt865_ucode_timeout

I am unsure if I should integrate this parameter as default with value
1 for a bt865. Which consequences does this mean for loading the
modules? Or are the cases where this parameter is needed very rarely?

Thanks in advance,
Björn Meier

second 0.15.3 release candidate -- please test

Hi,

After a few days of sourceforge's CVS unavailability, here is a new
release candidate for 0.15.3. The most significant change since the
first release candidate is the (hopefully) fix for automatic firmware
loading with 2.4 kernels. You can get the rc2 tarball at
  http://dxr3.sourceforge.net/download/em8300-0.15.3-rc2.tar.gz

People who still have a working 2.4 kernel are especially urged to test
this new release candidate, and check if firmware loading works as
expected.

Thanks in advance, I am waiting for your reports,

Nicolas

Problems with dxr3 and kernel 2.6.17-rc1

Hi,

I've just compiled new 2.6.17-rc1 kernel, and I think that you should
know, that there are some problems with compiling any version of dxr3

black is grey and red is pink

Hi, again,

I found a set of module parameters that put NTSC output
in the right size, and not green. But still the colors are not
right. They are not rotated, but washed out. Black looks
grey, red looks pink, etc. Adjusting with DHC has no effect,
nor does using -contrast and -brightness and -saturation in
MPlayer. Kernel is 2.6.9 and em8300 is 0.15.2.

The exact same hardware and microcode work just fine
with kernel 2.4.20.

Any suggestions?

Thomas

That's really bad news, it means that the API is being broken, once
again.... :-(
I'll try to work this out, but I can't promise anything for 0.15.3. If
anyone wants to prepare a patch, feel free...

Cheers,

Nicolas,

I guess you need to install the source of your kernel in
/usr/src/linux-2.6.13-15.8 ...

And the same module version as well? Can you check again with kernel
2.4.20 and then with 2.6.9? If you can confirm that it works fine with
2.4.20 but not with 2.6.9, it means that something is severly broken,
and I have no idea what...

Nicolas
