Problem with eSATA Port Multiplier

Hi,

I've got a no-name PMP that I want to connect to the eSata port on 
my mobo.

Attached are the output from "lspci -vvv" (It's a SiL 3132 chip and 
the sata_sil24 driver is loaded) and /var/log/syslog.

I'm running a stock kernel:
   $ uname -r
   2.6.32-5-amd64

The actual h/w is "different" in that you "push" the hdd into the 
enclosure and it's held in via a leaf spring.  Thus, I wonder if the 
PMP isn't firmly connecting with the hdd.

(Yes, I've Googled, but to no avail.)

Staples "Relay (tm)" 4 Gb USB sticks - slow or normal (lenny)?

I keep one copy of my latest backup on usb sticks that I keep in my
pack.  Yesterday, I recreated it.  It's an ext2 ptn:

   /dev/sdb1 on /media/usb0 type ext2 (rw,noexec,nodev,sync,noatime)

That happens when I plug it in (udev?).

   drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 2009-05-20 22:55 /media/sdb1/

I plugged it in at 17:13, started the copy minutes later, and it took
until 03:43 to finish, which is pretty sucky.  CD copies take like ten
minutes.

637     /scratch/afio/

Is it just that usb's slow, or is the box doing it wrong?  Is it my
preference for ext2?  I've tried w both usb hubs and directly into
laptop; same, same.

This's on a HP Pavilion dv4 AMD-64.

If people are in dire need for testing their email configurations, why
not reply to an open thread (with relevant and related information)?
Or wait and see if new mail from the lists gets delivered?

Makes me wanna reboot and hunt around for Cool and Quiet.

I usually have this on 525 MHz using "ondemand" governor.  Damned near
every flashy news story or youtube video spikes cpu to ca. 90%.

I've never noted it ramping up cpu Mhz to handle the extra load, but
then, I don't know what either it or I am doing here.  Sucks.

Hay Ron,

Can you post dmesg output please.  Also, have you confirmed all cables
are firmly engaged?  Have you tried more than one eSATA cable?

Can you please post every bit of information you can find WRT the PMP
device and the drive enclosure?  Are they on in the same?  If you have
pictures of the devices that would be very helpful, so I can get an idea
of what plugs into what, and where, and how.

In case if anyone is having the same problem: I ended up buying a new adapter based on the Prolific PL-2303HX
chip. The vendor advertised that it was compatible with Linux and indeed it is. Worked out of the box.

Do You know where it is? - There is no /var/log/courier dir. nor file,

grepping for word courier of /var/log/messages gave me nothing (it is

too big to view it in a editor). grepping for log in /etc/courier gave
me too no idea.

Yep. Very weird, indeed. I've never seen something like that. Hardware 
detection issues (and PS/2 keyboard is a low-lovel peripheral) tends to
be a wide problem affecting all users, not just one. I fail to see how 
KDE3 user settings can lead to your current  situation :-?
