Debian Weekly News - December 2nd, 2003
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to this year's 48th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for
the Debian community. Still not all services have been resurrected
from the security [1]breach the Debian project faced. Development is
effectively stalled since November 21st, since both ftp-master and the
CVS archive haven't been re-opened yet.

Fixing RC Bugs. David B. Harris [2]proposed a mail [3]template to
encourage developers to fix release-critical (RC) bugs in their
packages. It is intended to be sent to the maintainer for each of his
source packages that contains critical problems.

Status of Mozilla. Eric Valette [4]pointed out some problems he
experienced with the Debian packages of Mozilla 1.5. He also noted
that the default font size has been modified compared to upstream
binary distribution which can make the appearance look rather ugly. A
lot of [5]bugs are also reported against this package and require
skilled people to fix them. Any takers?

Welcome to this year's 49th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for
the Debian community. Not only Debian servers were the target of
attackers but also one of [1]Gentoo's servers as was the Free Software
Foundation's [2]Savannah system. Wired News [3]explained some of the
background and context of [4]LinEx, the Spanish Debian variant.

HP to expand Debian Support. Hewlett-Packard is [5]planning to expand
support offerings to customers who run Debian GNU/Linux. According to
HP Linux Chief Technology Officer and former Debian Project Leader,
Bdale Garbee, "HP Services is working on some projects right now to
increase the number and quality of the support offerings that they can
provide to customers who want to run Debian." Until now HP's Debian
support has only been limited services on request.

Welcome to this year's 50th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for
the Debian community. Finally, the website [1]CVS repository was
[2]resurrected, but the website can still not be updated. Chris Halls
[3]announced that he and René Engelhard have verified all recent
changes in the OpenOffice.org CVS repository. Christoph Berg
[4]proposed to call the experimental distribution "scud", which is
the name of Sid's dog that broke toys even worse than Sid did.

New Features in APT-RPM. Joey Hess [5]noticed an [6]article that
described features in apt-rpm that are not available with plain
apt-get. Some of them would be nice to have as well. The most
interesting feature is to install local files but automatically
satisfy the dependencies through network download if required.

Welcome to this year's 51st issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for
the Debian community. Finally, the Debian website is [1]functional
again, but not all mirrors are already updating. The [2]FSF Europe is
[3]seeking [4]donations to secure their work in the future. Some
political factions make clear statements with regards to the use of
Free Software. So did the new Queensland Greens party and
[5]announced that their website is running Free Software on top of
the Debian operating system. Merry Christmas to all of you who
celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Mass pbuilder Installation Testing. Junichi Uekawa [6]reported about
his efforts to test the installation of packages in a pbuilder
environment. About 300 packages failed to install, 20 of them were
kernel packages and about 50 were Emacs 20 packages since Emacs
doesn't install when stdin is directed to /dev/null.

Debian Timeline 2003. We have prepared a [5]timeline for the ending
year as retrospective of a quite exciting and active year. It lists
(hopefully) all major events of the year 2003 as they were mentioned
in the past 51 issues of DWN. They are composed by a total of 36
volunteer writers and translated into a dozen languages by many
developers. A big and warm thanks for your great work.

Testing Advances. Anthony Towns [6]reported that several packages
with release-critical bugs have been removed from testing. Perl and
zlib were also pushed to move into testing soon. He also noted that
anyone can upgrade and downgrade bug reports if it is appropriate.
