Debian Weekly News - August 6th, 2002

Welcome to this year's 30th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for
the Debian community. The former Debian developer zhaoway wrote a
[1]Chinese article about Jigdo for IBM developerWorks/China. Nice to
see the word spread. This seemed to be an easy week, many developer
were probably enjoying their holliday, but the security team became
hyperactive. That also applies to Branden Robinson, apparently, since
he [2]announced Debian packages for XFree86 4.2.

Ceasing Security with the DMCA? CNET News.com [3]reports about an
incident invoking the controversial [4]Digital Millennium Copyright
Act (DMCA). Hewlett Packard has threatened to sue a team of
researchers who published a vulnerability in Tru64 Unix. Since HP
distributes Debian and two members of the Debian Security Team are
U.S. citizens, are they in danger of a similar threat? One week later,
HP released a [5]press release saying that they will not use the DMCA
to stifle research or impede the flow of information that would
benefit their customers and improve their system security.

Welcome to this year's 31st issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for
the Debian community. This was a guiet week as well, except for
security updates. However, we don't want you to get bored. Check out
this [1]Free Software licensing quiz. The Linux users group of Davis
collected articles about Free Software and compiled a [2]list of
reasons to avoid certain non-free systems.

New Python Version? Torsten Landschoff [3]wondered when Python 2.2
will become the default version for Debian, since the new upstream
source of python-gnome for Gnome 2 requires Python 2.2 for building.
Chris Lawrence [4]explained that there was a consensus apparently,
that Debian would move to Python 2.3 as the next default Python
version, skipping 2.2 entirely.

Ceasing db1 from GNU libc. Ben Collins [5]announced that db1 has been
gone from glibc proper since after glibc 2.1.3. The only reason it was
kept around was for backward compatibility. According to Ben, it's now
time to dump this old version early in the sarge release cycle so we

Welcome to this year's 32nd issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for
the Debian community. The FLOSS (see below) survey is finished and the
results were posted. The most interesting bit is the number of Debian
users among the participants, however, since we pointed out that
survey, we may have contributed a little bit to the trend...

Interview with Mr. Tux Paint In this [1]interview with Bill Kendrick
of New Breed Software, Bill explains that he decided to write [2]Tux
Paint because a friend of him who uses Debian Jr. with his children
noticed we were lacking a paint program for children. Before Bill
wrote it, there was nothing like Tux Paint, designed specifically for
children with sounds, fun to use "magic" tools, and a simple user
interface in our distribution. The closest thing to it was The Gimp,
and that is a program event adults have trouble using. Debian Jr. now
has not only packaged Tux Paint, but keeps tabs closely on new
releases, communicating regularly with Bill about development of new
features, and helping him to shake out the bugs.

Where should Debian People IRC? Since about 1996, the Debian project
used IRC servers of Open Projects Network for real-time communication.
Josip Rodin [3]points out that the founder of this network has

Welcome to this year's 33rd issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for
the Debian community. Many developers still seem to be enjoying their
holidays so the lists are quite silent, compared to other times of the
year. After large numbers complaints that were posted on
[1]debian-project, [2]Slashdot and [3]Debian Planet, Rob Levin, head
of the network in question, finally [4]announced that global notices
for fundraising will stop.

Reviving a Constitutional Amendment. In December 2000, Raul Miller
[5]proposed a General Resolution (GR) to fix the voting process as
defined in the [6]constitution. The GR was withdrawn until a
committee assigned to study the problem returned with a
recommendation. The Debian Project Secretary, Manoj Srivastava,
recently [7]revived the discussion.
