mentors for multi-archive support in dak

Hi,

I submitted a SoC proposal to implement multi-archive support in
dak[1] and am looking for an additional mentor besides Joerg Jaspert.

This change would be useful to merge backports.d.o with the main archive
and could also be of interest for ppas (if they should not live inside
the main archive). It also would get rid of the current build queue
code which basically duplicates half of what the main archive does
(ie. it manages a private archive).

I have CCed the people who expressed interest in the PPA project
suggested earlier as this is a related proposal.

Regards,
Ansgar

If you can make it easier to distribution, It will be much more great.

PyPI to Debian repository converter (GSoC 2012 project)

Hi!

My name is Natalia Frydrych. This year, for the first time, I want to
take part in the Google Summer of Code.

My project proposal is available at:
http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2012/StudentApplications/NataliaFrydrych

I am going to write it using Python. Most libraries I have ever used,
were installed using apt-get, but pypi.python.org contains many
interesting libraries that are not available in Debian. My goal is to
create tool that will convert PyPI to Debian repository and thus make
installation of such libraries much easier.

Please let me know what do you think about my proposal. Does such a
conversion make sense? Do you have any suggestions? Any additional
comments? Is anyone willing to co-mentor my project? I already talked
to Piotr, who is interested to lead the project, but any additional
help is appreciated...

procedure for projects

Hi,

I'd like to know what is the procedure now for the GoSC Debian projects.

I am discussing/reviewing the students proposal regarding my project but when/how should I select 1 student? Deadline is 20th of Aprill but what should I do to put a student as selected ?
At least, there are many projects, but what how many slots did Google allocated to Debian ? And how will we manage projects selection if number of slots is lower than Google allocated ones?

Thanks

Olivier

To mark a student (and therefore the proposal) as accepted, toggle the
'Accept proposal' switch to 'Yes'. This actually doesn't accept a
student, it just marks the proposal as a candidate for acceptance; the
final acceptance depends on whether the above 'accepted proposal' gets
the slot or not.

You can select the student at anytime between now and April 19th.

The number of slots we get will be announced on April 11th.

In case that happens, we will do either of the following:

    * request Google for additional slots in case another org gives
them away (unlikely),
    * Ana, Gergely and I will decide which projects will get the slots.

hey, its easter :). I am in general very interested in the PPA topic, but I
wanted to talk to ganneff first if he thinks my help would be of any use. I
am no dak or python expert, sO maybe I am not the perfect mentor. But if
nobody steps in, would do the task.

Information for Mentors: Student Selection

Hi mentors,

To help you get started with the application review period, here is a
short guide that covers some important points about student selection.

* Student Selection

To mark a student (and therefore the proposal) as accepted, toggle the
'Accept proposal' switch (on the student application page) to 'Yes'.
This doesn't actually accept a student, it just marks the proposal as
a candidate for acceptance; the final acceptance depends on whether
the above accepted proposal gets the slot or not. You can select a
student at anytime between now and April 16th.

Please don't mark proposals as 'Ignore' -- you just have to mark the
proposal you want to choose as 'Accepted' and ignore the other ones.
Accepting a proposal does not notify the students, and as a mentor,
you are requested not to tell them before April 23rd as to whether
they have been accepted or rejected. Also, at Debian, we don't use the
scoring system, so scoring applications has no bearing on their
acceptance/ rejection.

In case you don't have any good proposals for your project, there is
no compulsion to accept a student.

* Slots

Here is how the slot allocation process works:

    - we request slots from Google based on how many projects (and
available mentors for those projects) we have.
    - Google allocates us slots -- if we have less slots and more
projects, then the GSoC admins will decide which projects get the
slots.

Carol's email to 'Google Summer of Code Mentors List' (subject: "Slot
Allocations, Student Proposals, and Deduplication - Long But
Important") covers the slot allocation system in detail, so please go
through it if you want the finer details.

In case you have any more doubts, please clear them now only so that
we don't make any mistakes about this process!

Re: Information for Mentors: Student Selection

Correction:

In the last email, I wrote about accepting a student by using the
'Accept proposal' switch to 'Yes'. Please ignore that, that option is
for org admins only.

For now, please decide which student you want to accept and we will
send instructions soon on how to convey this to us.

Sorry for the confusion,

I'd be happy to provide technical input, but like Alexander, I'm not a
dak expert so my contribution on that side would be somewhat limited.
I'd be fine with being a co-mentor, though. (I understood Ganneff was
happy to be the primary mentor.)
