Bug#674069: packages.debian.org: new archive sections education, introspection missing in the sections list

Package: www.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi.

New sections in the archive are not mentioned in the sections list page [1] : education, introspection, metapackages.
This situation has some drawbacks:

- the debian policy [2] points to [1] to find the sections definitions, that does not appear there.

- some packages are already declared to belong to these sections (see eg. geogebra, girl1.2-gcr-3), so
they cannot be found through their section.

Thanks,
Alexis Bienvenue.

Bug#673993: wiki.debian.org: please clarify the structure for DebianEvents/*

Package: wiki.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: events <at> debian.org
Usertags: events-list

Hi there!

While this is more a discussion internal to the Events Team, I would
like to raise it up to a broader audience (once and for all, even this
is only a hope).

Currently, the "entry" page is DebianEvents [1]. I would have preferred
to simply have it as Events, for two reasons: we are on the Debian wiki
and most of the events Debian participate are not organized by Debian,
thus no distinction needed [2]. Nevertheless, this is a minor problem.

[1] <https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEvents>
[2] <https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEvents#Detailed_information>

That page has a structural problem, given that the information in the
section "Adding a new event" [3] do not reflect the links just after
that section. The current instruction advises to use the name
"de/2012/LinuxTag" (country code, year, event name), while OTOH the
links below are for events related to a language:

* DebianEvents/de: Events in the German-speaking countries
* DebianEvents/fr: Events in the French-speaking countries
* DebianEventsNordic: Events in the Nordic region (i.e. Iceland, Norway,
                      Sweden, Finland, Denmark)
* DebianLatinoamerica/LocalMeetings: meetings in Latin American
                      countries

[3] <https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEvents#Adding_a_new_event>

I would enforce the "country-code/year/event-name" policy, which I know
also means quite a lot of changes. Also because otherwise we could end
up having language "middleware" pages [4], which should be avoided IMHO.

[4] <https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEvents/fr/>

Actually, I discovered this because after having created the wiki page
for the RMLL 2012 [5] and having sent the coordination email [6] someone
privately told me about an existing page for the same event [7]. I have
now merged the two pages, redirecting the fr [7] to the ch one [6].

In This Tough Job Market..."How Many Interviews Does it Take?" by Steve Eddington

Hello,

I hope you enjoy and find some benefit from my article, "How Many Interviews Does it Take?" This and other hiring tips and commentary can be found at http://www.electronicsearch.com

I welcome your comments (can be done from my blog page link below) and of course, your resume or call.

How many Interviews does it take?

I have had several conversations with candidates recently and some interesting facts have begun to surface.

One friend said, "I had 13 interviews to eventually get hired."

Another said, "it is a 30 employee company and I have now had 6 interviews, and I am still going."

I found myself laughing and then started thinking that If a person needs to meet 20% of the staff at a firm to be "accepted," what if the company had 5000 employees? How would that work?

Maybe like this?

(Imagine the green smoke and eerie violin music of a dream)

"Yes, Mr. Jones, you will be meeting 1000 of your potential colleagues before we extend you an offer. With some luck, the interviewing process should be completed in 2 years. After the interviewing process is completed, we will require 6 months to evaluate the responses from the 1000 people and give you an answer promptly thereafter. Be advised that we will not discount the fact that more interviews may be necessary to fully evaluate your credentials. As a convenience, we have set up a web site for the purposes of keeping the information organized and accessible. Certain confidential parts of this site will, of course, not be viewable by you, the applicant, but you will be able to monitor how many of the interviewers have responded positively or negatively. Be further advised that the number of positive responses versus negative responses will not necessarily be the deciding factor in our decision. We appreciate your interest in us and wish you the best."

End of imaginary, dream-like, simulated altered-reality pictogram.

I am not saying that my perverted, cartoon-like vision of the ultimate nightmare will ever really HAPPEN, it is just another example of how the "interviewing and selection" process has evolved over the last year or two.

I am also NOT taking a cheap shot at employers who feel that "multiple" interviews are necessary to really evaluate someone. Sometimes it is necessary.

This is humor.

Factually influenced fiction.

In the old days, I would have a sales person come in at least twice to see if they owned more than one suit. Lots of times, they didn't.

If you find yourself in the endless interview loop, it is never inappropriate to ask how long the process is and what to expect from each interview. The employer should be able to tell you how, and WHY they do it,  or better yet, ask the headhunter.

Steve Eddington

Debian at GSI

Dear Debian webmasters,

would you be so kind to add another entry to the Debian users list:

1. GSI Helmholtzzentrum fuer Schwerionenforschung GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany
Sorry for the long official title. Fell free to change it to GSI,
Darmstadt, Germany
2. non-profit
3. http://gsi.de/
4. shorten if required:

"GSI is a German non-profit research lab that runs a heavy ion accelerator
and is part of the Helmholtz association.

The HPC department of GSI is running a Linux "farm" with more than 1000 nodes.
We primarily use Debian for our Linux installation since the last millennium
(ca. 1997).

We have recently put on a 10 000 core compute cluster and 1.5 PB Lustre storage
with Infiniband-only networking running Debian Squeeze and managed by GridEngine
- on top of our existing ~ 5000 CPU core cluster with more than 2 PB Lustre
storage.

Apart from our compute cluster we also provide some hundred desktops,
servers for data acquisition, central IT services and collaboration
web services with Debian.

We profit a lot from the more than 2000 packages that we can simply pull from
the standard Debian repositories for our default desktop installation."

I'm sorry we did not request an entry on the Debian users list during the last
decade.

Cheers,
	Christopher

Dear debian-science community,

I'm sorry for this rather long post, but in the spirit of the "Debian at ESRF" post I'd like to give some
information about the Debian-based computing infrastructure at GSI [1], a German non-profit research
lab that runs a heavy ion accelarator and is part of the Helmholtz association [2].

We are running a more-or-less Debian-only Linux "farm" with more than 1000 nodes. We used the Debian distro
for our Linux boxes since the last millennium (maybe 1997?).

We recently put on a 10 000 core compute cluster and 1.5 PB Lustre
storage with Infiniband-only networking running Debian Squeeze and managed by GridEngine - on top of our
existing ~ 5000 CPU core cluster with more than 2 PB Lustre storage.

Apart from our compute cluster we also provide some hundred desktops,
servers for data acquisition, central IT services (DNS, DHCP, Radius, MTAs, ...) and collaboration web
services (Wikis, Subversion, ...) with Debian.

Our accelerator controls unfortunately moves from VMS to Red Hat for
the shiny care-less all-inclusive support - but at least it's Linux ...

Our Debian installation is actually not particularly "scientific". The big
packages like ROOT and Cernlib are installed from source as our
scientists need dozens of customized versions installed at the same
time and don't really honor (maybe understand?) the merits of proper package
management.

Nevertheless we profit a lot from the 2000+ packages we pull from the
standard Debian repositories for our default desktop installation.

In the high energy physics community we are quite alien as everybody
else uses "Scientific Linux" that has been created by CERN and Fermilab
when Red Hat changed its licensing. At that time we already were happy
with Debian and promoted it as an alternative but unfortunately the big
sites were too scared to make that move (different packaging system, no
commercial support, the usual complaints).

BTW: We currently have an open position in our HPC group [3]. The job offer is in German only unfortunately
m(. Basically the job description covers all our tasks from high-level configuration management with
Chef to fiddling with broken hardware in case of an urgent emergency (this became more and more seldom
during the years). The new position will probably focus a lot on monitoring, which did not grow fast enough
with the growth of the farm during the last years.
Please contact me if you have any questions and don't hesitate to send any applications in English.

Cheers,
	Christopher

CD FAQ: Installing to a USB drive for Windows users

The provision of advice for users on how to write an isohybrid image to
a USB drive under Windows has been discussed previously at:

   http://lists.debian.org/debian-www/2011/09/msg00056.html

Below are the notes I made when testing four programs with Windows XP
and Vista Home Edition. Apologies for not submitting them as a patch to
the CD FAQ web page but I do not know how to do that.

I think Win32 Disk Imager, Unetbootin and LinuxLive USB Creator all
claim to support Windows 7, so there should be no real problem using
them with that OS. I've not yet been able test Flashnul under Windows 7
but have seen a reference which says it does work, although there is a
niggling indication the drive letter rather than the index number has to
be used. Hence my reluctance to offer definitive advice - 'You almost
certainly . . .'

A device written by Flashnul and Win32 Disk Imager appears to be
identical to one written with dd or cat. LiLi uses the whole device,
renames /isolinux to /syslinux, adds a file or two of its own to the
disk but boots to the familiar Debian splash screen. Unetbootin also
adds files and, in addition, presents its own menu rather than the
Debian one. Nevertheless, it will boot an installer iso.

Note: The spelling 'Avaible' is not mine!

o<-----o<-----o<-----o<-----o<-----o<-----o<-----o<-----o<-----o<-----

How do I write a CD image to a USB flash drive in a Windows environment?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flashnul and Win32 Disk Imager do not care how the drive is partitioned
or formatted but Unetbootin and LiLi deal with the iso in a different
way from these two and require a single formatted FAT16 or FAT32
partition to write the iso image to.

Flashnul (http://shounen.ru/soft/flashnul)

Download flashnul-1rc1.zip, unzip the file, obtain a command prompt with
Administrator rights and change to the directory containing flashnul.exe.
There is English and Russion documentation in the same place and the
command

   flashnul --help

will output the options which are available. Flashnul provides similar
functionality to the dd command mentioned above.

Without the USB drive inserted run

   flashnul -p

There will be two lists; one for available physical drives and a second
for available logical disks. Insert the USB drive and re-run the
command. This will enable you to identify the index number and drive
letter for the flash device. An example:

   Avaible physical drives:
   0 size = 60022480896 (55 Gb)
   1 size = 1010926752 (963 Mb)

   Avaible logical disks:
   C:\
   D:\
   E:\

You almost certainly want the drive index number, 1 in this case, so,
with the Debian iso in the same directory as the flashnul files, write
it to the USB drive with:

  flashnul 1 -L debian.iso

You now have a second chance to verify you are writing to the correct
device before typing 'yes' because there will about half a screen of
information to check. Actually, prior to writing, you could also read
from the drive with

   flashnul 1 -R

and watch for the LED on it flashing.
