Bug#539482: texlive-base-bin: bibtex should use the alternatives system

Package: texlive-base-bin
Version: 2007.dfsg.2-6
Severity: wishlist

There are currently at least 2 working bibtex implementations in Debian,
i.e. nbibtex and TeX Live's one, and there's going to be more (see
bugs #412085, #535116).

Therefore, I believe it would be a good idea for TeX Live's bibtex to
start using the Debian alternatives system, so that other
implementations could be made available under the /usr/bin/bibtex and
/usr/share/man/man1/bibtex.1.gz names.

I merged yolur bug with the other bug we got recently. The fix is
already in oldstable-proposed-updates
(http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/oldstable-proposed-updates/),
however I can't tell you, when it will be available in general.

Does all the bibtex implementations have the same interface (ie the same
command-line options) ?
It is required if want to be able to use alternatives.

All the implementations accept the most basic syntax, i.e.:

     bibtex AUXFILE[.aux]

nbibtex supports the -min-crossref=N, -help and -version, but not -terse.
Unfortunately, other implementations support none of these options.
However, if you believe that it is essential to have all of them
implemented (I don't think it's necessary), I am willing to contribute
patches for pybtex and (possibly) pybliographer.

As #538557 does not belong to TL at all, I've deleted that bug # from
the TeX Live changelog.

Hope this was correct.

TL2009 development, upstream syncing?

Hi,

well, I cannot promise to do much work on the packages, and I won't save
the December freeze (if it happens after all the discussions, I don't
care much about it. Also won't make uploads of TL2007 for its RC bugs,
let the release team do that).

But still, I wonder how we should coordinate with upstream
development. It seems to me that the next step of Debian packaging would
be to work on the file conflicts, adding Replaces: for moved files.

Norbert, do you expect considerable changes of collection contents in
TL2009 in the next months? Does it therefore make sense to create new
upstream versions often? Or can we take the easy way and just work on
the current upstream tarballs, updating only after the upgrade from 2007
goes smoothly?

TIA, Frank
