Bug#535551: initscripts: skeleton init script completely silent if kernel invoked with quiet option

Package: initscripts
Version: 2.86.ds1-62
Severity: minor

Hi,

I usually boot my kernel with a "quiet" command line since I don't
want the system to spew screenfuls of init messages before the splash
screen takes over. This, as a - surprising - side effect causes
/lib/init/vars.sh to set the VERBOSE environment variable which in
turn causes an init script based on /etc/init.d/skeleton to totally
silence itself. This comes as a surprise.

IMO, the wish to have a noiseless system start does not include the
wish that an init script which may be invoked from the command line
days later does not give any feedback about its operation.

Please consider returning the skeleton init script to the behavior
that is common for init scripts, which is not honoring a VERBOSE
environment variable to switch off the log_foo calls.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#535557: initscripts: minor problems in package description

Package: initscripts
Version: 2.86.ds1-63
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

In the package description,

-Description: Scripts for initializing and shutting down the system
+Description: scripts for initializing and shutting down the system

DevRev6.2.2-compliance, in passing. The other synopses in the same
control file are entitled to their capital letters.

The scripts in this package initialize a standard Debian
 - GNU/Linux system at boot time and finalize it at halt or
 - reboot time.
+ system at boot time and shut it down at halt or reboot time.

Two issues:
 1) initscripts_2.86.ds1-63_kfreebsd-{amd64,i386}.deb
 2) "finalise" is some sort of malapropism (it means something
	closer to "put into its canonical form ready for use");
"terminate" might be closer, but "shut down", as in the
	synopsis, is the normal idiom.

This is as intended. I interpret the 'quiet' kernel option to mean
'only show errors' during boot.

I agree with this. Outside the boot, the scripts should report their
informational messages as usual.

Not an option. Will need to figure out a way to detect the difference
between the boot setting and the command line setting.

Happy hacking,

thanks from my side as well.

Probably because before it was impossible to fix the issue, given the
new getty it is now possible. But I just recently realised that it
also need to be applied to new systems, which (as your patch states)
should be done.

Greetings

Bug#197750: Donations(THE KING OF POP STAR

Though, a lot of criticisms has been raised against "THE KING OF POP STAR"
, but he remains greatest forever. Even after his death, everywhere around
the world people are devastated and nobody can believe that this sudden
death happened.
Many reports has been published about his death, many rumor has been
carried on air with different analysis.

But the only fact that we believe is that Michael is dead which bring a
big sorrow to us the MICHAEL JACKSON ORGANIZATION AND CHARITY. And we
say........... "MICHAEL YOU WILL LIVE IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER !!"

Michael Jackson was a true humanitarian, an example to us all. He has
devoted much time and money to a wide range of charities. He loves
children and takes time out when touring secretly visiting sick children.
He also has special rooms at his home Never land for sick and terminally
ill children to stay over. He was listed in the 2000 edition of the
Guinness Book Of World Records for breaking the world record for the "Most
Charities Supported By a Pop Star".

We therefore use these medium to seek the support and donations from
everyone and all fans of MICHAEL JACKSON to assist the sick, motherless
and the orphans in the Michael Jackson's organization. We do this, because
this is the way Michael would have wanted and to keep his good work
moving.

We will publish this in face book group the amounts collected, and also we
will publish this officially in local newspapers.

So no amount is too small for Michael who has changed a lot of life's
during his life time.

Bug#535883: sysvinit-utils: bashism in /bin/sh script

Package: sysvinit-utils
Severity: minor
Version: 2.86.ds1-63
User: debian-release <at> lists.debian.org
Usertags: goal-dash

Hello maintainer,

While performing an archive wide checkbashisms (from the 'devscripts' package)
check I've found your package containing a /bin/sh script making use
of a bashism.

checkbashisms' output:
> possible bashism in ./usr/sbin/service line 118 ($"foo" should be
> eval_gettext "foo"):
> echo $"${SERVICE}: unrecognized service" >&2

Not using bash (or a Debian Policy conformant shell interpreter which doesn't
provide such an extra feature) as /bin/sh is likely to lead to errors or
unexpected behaviours.
Please be aware that although bash is currently the default /bin/sh there was
a release goal for Lenny to make dash the default /bin/sh[1], and has been
proposed for squeeze as well[2][3].

If you want more information about dash as /bin/sh, you can read:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2008/01/msg00189.html

For more information supporting this goal please refer to Debian Policy,
section 10.4, at:
