Bug#766007: iceweasel: SSL error - cannot connect to certain servers

Hi Daniel,

> It looks like this is a really old server, which can only support SSL
> v3.0.

That could well be ... unfortunately

> what if you add the flag "-V ssl3:ssl3" to the tstclnt implementation?

Looks better, finishes with
...
tstclnt: using asynchronous certificate validation
tstclnt: Read from server -1 bytes
tstclnt: handshake was paused by auth certificate hook
tstclnt: authentication of server cert failed: SEC_ERROR_UNTRUSTED_ISSUER: Peer's certificate
issuer has been marked as not trusted by the user.
tstclnt: exiting with return code 254

Does that mean it is actually an ssl3 problem, only?

> were you able to try a libnss3 downgrade? if so, what were its results?

That didn't change anything (separate email I sent).

Bug#766404: iceweasel-l10n-fi: misleading translation "Muokkaa valitsimia" in customizableWidgets

Package: iceweasel-l10n-fi
Version: 1:31.2.0esr-2~deb7u1
File: /usr/lib/iceweasel/browser/extensions/langpack-fi@...rg.xpi
Severity: minor
Tags: upstream, l10n

Click the menu button at the right end of the tool bar, and then
click the "Muokkaa" button at the bottom of the menu to start
customizing it. By default, the topmost item in the menu is the
"Leikkaa Kopioi Liitä" (Cut Copy Paste) widget. Drag the widget
to the "Lisää työkaluja ja ominaisuuksia" area at left side of
the menu. A miniature version of the widget appears there, and
it has a caption below it: "Muokkaa valitsimia". This caption is
misleading because you cannot use the widget to edit any
controls; rather, the widget consists of controls with which you
can edit text.

Within langpack-fi@..., the string is
defined in
chrome/fi/locale/browser/customizableui/customizableWidgets.properties.
It seems this has not yet been fixed in the upstream repository:
http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n/mozilla-aurora/fi/file/ed5975cb1b75/browser/chrome/browser/customizableui/customizableWidgets.properties
http://hg.mozilla.org/l10n-central/fi/file/45c33ed9944f/browser/chrome/browser/customizableui/customizableWidgets.properties
but I'm not that familiar with their version-control practices.

Alternative translations:
* "Muokkausvalitsimet" would be more correct, and pretty close
to the current translation. I'm not sure "controls" is
  customarily translated to "valitsimet", though.
* "Muokkauksen valitsimet" would be consistent with "Lähennyksen
valitsimet" in customizableWidgets.properties, but it seems a
bit clunky and might even be misunderstood as something with
which you can select edits that you have previously made.
* "Muokkaussäätimet" would be consistent with "Näytä säätimet"
  in chrome/fi/locale/browser/browser.dtd. However, "säätimet"
seems very appropriate for trackbars or dials but not so good
for instant commands like "Leikkaa" (Copy).
* "Muokkauspainikkeet" would reflect that the widget consists of
three buttons. This is my favorite for now.
* "Muokkauskomennot" seems old-fashioned.  I don't think user
interfaces nowadays talk about giving commands to the computer.
* "Leikepöytä" would reflect that all three buttons in the widget
relate to the clipboard, but I think that word isn't used much
nowadays, so users might not recognize it.

I too am seeing this particular problem, since this new version of
iceweasel. (I use XFCE4 if that's relevant.) It's common but
intermittent: I haven't yet pinned down a consistent trigger.

Bug#766007: iceweasel: SSL error - cannot connect to certain servers

The latest Iceweasel security update disables SSL3 based on a
well-publicised vulnerability:
https://www.debian.org/security/2014/dsa-3050

This breaks a number of sites that only have SSL available for
encryption. I would personally have preferred a warning, but this is
really a problem with the sites using obsolete encryption algorithms,
not with Iceweasel.

Bug#766249: iceweasel: wheezy force upgraded to 31.2.0esr-2~deb7u1

Subject: iceweasel: wheezy force upgraded to 31.2.0esr-2~deb7u1
Package: iceweasel
Version: 31.2.0esr-2~deb7u1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

used dselect for routine security patches

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
dselect, Update, Select, Enter (accept selections), Install

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Iceweasel 31.2.0esr2~deb7u1 from debian unstable installed

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Iceweasel 24.8.1esr1~deb7u1 from debian stable installed

This is a major breach of protocol for debian security patches.
You DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT release major new upstream
versions in the middle of a stable release cycle. You certainly
do not release new versions which are significantly incompatible
with the old version.

I filed this bug against iceweasel as I see no indication of
this misbehavior for any other package upgraded by
dselect. If this should turn out to be a dselect error, please
accept my apologies and advise so that I may refile.

Oh, the bugs are very actual.

I said why I didn't.

The only action you could take right now is to convince your fellow
Debian developers to take good bug reports (like the ones I
mentioned) more seriously, otherwise you'll only get bad ones.

My action plan is to try one or two more versions when they come
out, and if they aren't any better, switch to another browser.

Thanks for listening, bye.

Bug#766158: iceweasel: crashes, hangs, burns CPU, doesn't quit, ...

Package: iceweasel
Version: 31.2.0esr-2~deb7u1
Severity: important

The new version is a disaster. Some problems I've observed within a
few days of using it:

- crashes (many times),

- hangs and doesn't react at all,

- reacts, but burns CPU,

- doesn't quit properly, i.e. when trying to restart says "... is
already running ...", and I've got to kill the remaining process.

Don't bother asking me for more detailed info. Seeing that even the
most detailed bug reports with patches generally seem to get ignored
in Debian (just some examples of my own reports: 589601, 742469,
760571, 675101, 760556), I'm not wasting my time anymore trying to
debug things which then get ignored anyway.

I've now downgraded to 24 in order to be able to use it at all, so I
can't do more tests anyway.
