Bug#583731: Bug Traced to Application Code

I traced the change of behaviour when changing kernel versions to a
problem in the application itself.

One of the usb_control_msg calls was being made with data that the
device did not understand, and so the device was not responding and
usb_interrupt_read was returning an error status that the developer (not
me :-) never checked.

It is kind of amazing it ever worked, but the response buffer contained
valid data from a previous usb call, however the patches to the kernel
changed the contents of the buffer which 'broke' the broken application.

I updated the application code to fix the arguments to the
usb_control_msg call so that device responded correctly and to check the
return status of all of the usb calls and the application has now been
verified to work properly on 2.6.26-21lenny4, 2.6.26-22lenny1, 2.6.32-5,
2.6.32-trunk and a 2.6.34 kernel.

Apologies for not having a much deeper dig into this at the start.

Bug#591186: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: Kernel panic with 2.6.32-5 and e1000 and vlan interface enabled

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-15
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

Hi,

i'm experiencing serious problems with the latest squeeze kernel and e1000
network card. All seems to be fine until i do *not* enable vlan interfaces.

If i add one vlan interface, the kernel panics. The output below is from a machine
with several vlan interfaces enabled in /etc/network/interfaces. All interfaces just
set up like this:

iface eth1.3 inet manual
     vlan-raw-device eth1
     up /sbin/ifconfig eth1.3 up

The machine panics on boot and loops in reboot / panic forever. Output of
kernel message see below.

Hardware is an ALLNET FW8888 Box with 2 82541GI Gigabit Ethernet (these
are driven by e1000 module) and 3 82574L Gigabit Network Interfaces (these are
driven by e1000e). All are onboard. I have 3 of these boxes, all 3 have
the same problem.

Problem is definitively the 82541GI Interface driven by e1000 module.

If i configure one of the e1000e interfaces with "vconfig add . and . ifconfig up"

Will do so in two days when that version enters testing. Is it possible
through bugs.d.o to get a notification when a package which fixes a bug becomes
available for a certain distribution or suite? This would be an awesome
feature.

why do you come to that conclusion?
it is used by live-initramfs afair.

you don't give any rationale, so will close unless this gets motivated
properly and it be clear why we want that and what gain that would be.
