Broken links under /dev/.udev/db ?

Hi

Is it normal for there to be many broken symbolic links under the
/dev/.udev/db directory ?

eg
 class <at> vc <at> vcsa5 -> vcsa5
 block <at> md2 -> md2
 class <at> misc <at> device-mapper -> mapper/control
 block <at> loop0 -> loop0
 block <at> ram0 -> ram0

Should I be concerned that so many of the symbolic links are pointing to
files that do not exist ?

I'm running etch with the latest updates. My uname output is:
 Linux jack 2.6.18-5-vserver-k7 #1 SMP Mon Dec 24 19:45:10 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

I'm unfamiliar with the /dev/.udev feature, so apologies if this is a
dumb question.

Regards,
Declan

etch 2.6 kernel and modutils broken symlinks

Hi All

My system is running "etch" with the latest updates and a 2.6 kernel. It
has never installed or run a 2.4 or 2.2 kernel.

I've noticed that my system has some files that belong to the "modutils"
package (which is used with 2.2 and 2.4 kernels), however I don't have
that package installed. The files are "/sbin/ksyms" and
"/bin/kallsyms", both of which are symbolic links to "insmod.modutils"
which by the way doesn't exist.

In addition to those two files there are the following files which are
also symbolic links to the non-existant "insmod.modutils":

 /sbin/modprobe.modutils
 /sbin/lsmod.modutils
 /sbin/rmmod.modutils
 /bin/lsmod.modutils

Assuming that I continue to run 2.6 kernels, will these broken symbolic
links and missing "insmod.modutils" cause problems for my system? If so,
are there any recommended fixes ?

BTW, why are these broken symbolic links present on my system ? Is this
a known issue ?

Thanks,
Declan

It's a feature.

No.

Ignore them, they disappeared in lenny anyway.

They are needed.

Yes.

Bug#458493: linux-image-2.6 and JMicron IDE controller

Package: linux-image-2.6
Version: 2.6.22-6

Hi, I'm using debian lenny (testing) daily updated on a new machine. (motherboard : Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R)
I've got two dvdroms (one writer and one reader) plug on IDE controller.

02:00.0 IDE interface: JMicron Technologies, Inc. JMB368 IDE controller

Everything seems to work so far. But sometimes (when i try to access the dvdrom or when i do nothing) i've got a gnome-mount pop up that say this is impossible to mount the disc. So i checked the logs :

/var/log/messages
Dec 30 16:43:13 AE86 kernel: hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Dec 30 16:43:13 AE86 kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Dec 30 16:43:13 AE86 kernel: hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Dec 30 16:43:13 AE86 kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Dec 30 16:43:13 AE86 kernel: hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Dec 30 16:43:13 AE86 kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Dec 30 16:43:13 AE86 kernel: hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Dec 30 16:43:13 AE86 kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown

(hda and hdb are my dvd drives)

After some search on google, it appears that the kernel in testing come with "jmicron" the old module for jmicron controller.
The new one called pata_jmicron can be obtained by compiling with :  CONFIG_PATA_JMICRON=m

After rebuilding my kernel i reboot, and no more errors in logs.
But fstab need to be changed :
before :
/dev/hda /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/hdb /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

after :
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

Is it possible to make pata_jmicron the default module in next debian kernel ?

Thanks

Bug#458527: linux-image-2.6.18-5-686: Postinst script fails if grub not installed

In this case it would be better if the script gave a warning, that one should
manually update bootloader (lilo in my case). I am not sure if it is not a
kernel-package bug, because the same happens with my custom made linux-image.

Bug#458560: linux-2.6: please support parallel=<n> for parallel building

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.23-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

linux-2.6 currently allows building using several parallel jobs by
setting the DEBIAN_KERNEL_JOBS environment option. It would be great if
it could support the parallel=<n> option in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS.

See #209008 (debian-policy: [PROPOSAL] common interface for parallel building in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS)
for details.

Thank you,

Bug#458562: firmware-iwlwifi: iwlwifi should conflict with ipw3945d

Package: firmware-iwlwifi
Severity: normal

Hi,

Running an ipw3945 card in my laptop, I had problems since sometime to make it
work. The old ipw3945 module did not work anymore, so I tried to use the new
iwlwifi driver coming with 2.6.23 and the firmware-iwlwifi.

Because this does not conflict with ipw3945d, the ipw3945 service was always
started on boot time and it was not possible to have the new iwl3945 module
running.

I guess that making the package conflict could be an elegant solution.

I can provide more info it needed.
