Orca on Debian

Hello,

I'm interested in trying out Orca on Debian.
I'm going to do a fresh installation of Debian Lenny.
I've checked the Orca website, but I don't find any Debian-related information.
So, I have some questions:

Is it possible to enable orca on the first boot after install??
If so, how?
Since I need to use BRLTTY durring the installation, how will that effect Orca?
Can I use Orca in terminals under X?
Does Orca have the same cut/copy/paste-functions as Speakup?
Can Orca be used in combination with BRLTTY/Speakup, or do I need to
run it as a stand-alone screen reader?

I am afrsaid you have to manually install orca by running
"apt-get install gnome-orca" after your first boot.

Orca needs BRLTTY to do braille output anyway, so to answer
your question, brltty has a positive effect on orca :-).

You can use Orca with gnome-terminal.

No, Orca has no cut/copy/paste functionality by itself, you
use what GNOME and/or X11 provide to you.

Orca communicates with BRLTTY, so yes they interoperate.
If you switch to a text console, BRLTTY will automatically

Re: Orca on Debian

Hello Mario, and thanks for your reply.

I've now tried to install the Lenny version of Debian, but I got some
problems, so I switched back to Etch.
I wanted to try Lenny, because it has gnome-orca in the pool.
Will it also be available in the Etch pool?

So now, I have some more questions, and this time they are Debian spesific.
:-)

How can I get gnome-orca on Etch?
Do I need to take it from Lenny, or is it another source I can get it
from with apt?
When it is installed, will it run automatically, or do I need to
start it manualy?
Which packages do I need to get speech with Orca?
And, will it work right out of the box, or do I need to configure something?

Why don't you just change your sources.list from etch to lenny and do

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

That should take care of it for you. You can then install orca as set out
by Mario.

Good luck!

Re: Orca on Debian

Hello Mario,

I've now successfully upgraded to Debian Lenny.

I've installed Orca, I log into Gnome and press Alt+F2 as described
on the Orca website, I type "orca", and nothing happends.
Do I mis something important here, or is it a problem with
brltty/orca in combination?

cehck if your /etc/brlapi.key is readable for the user which is runnign
orca.
At least for me that solved the problem.

It is.

But not for me.
:-)

Do I need to get sighted help to configure Gnome before I can enter
the Gnome terminal?
I've not done anything with Gnome after the install, I just log in
and type Alt+F2.

BTW, I'm using BRLTTY 3.7.2.
Can this version be a part of the problem?

Did you run orca --setup from the shell (with BRLTTY running, of course)? If
not, try that.

I don't know, but if you want to experiment with Orca I would suggest
upgrading everything to the latest Debian Sid packages, as Orca and Gnome
accessibility have been evolving rapidly.

I have tried that now, and still nothing happends.

okay so:
- brltty is installed and brlapi in brltty is enabled (as I compile it
myself I'm not sure about the debian package)
- /etc/brlapi.key exists, is not mepty and user readable
- orca-setup is set to braille support on (braille-monitor is something
else so you don't need that)

note: in ngome 2.20 which I am running I sometimes have an extra dialog
which popsup before the desktop itself is loaded.
I ahve the foggiest idea what it is about, only that I ahve to nose-touch
the screen to follow my mousepointer to get it away :)

If you have no sight at all, ask soemone about it.

In generla the above spes should work but as Jason suggest, do upgrade to
at least gnome 2.20 orca 2.20 or maybe even 2.21 (not sure it that'll
work) and brltty 3.9
