Running BBrllty as an user

Hello,

 I have got a problem.

I have installed Debian testing unstable and I am using Brltty 3.4.1
 which comms with Debian testing/unstable.

As Root I can run Brltty with no problem however if I log in as User
 I get folowing error message:

console open error: 13 Permission denied
Cannot open Screen device: /dev/vcsa: Permission denied
 cannot read screen

I try to use the comand chmod 666 /dev/vcsa? however I get still the
same error if I try to run Brltty as an user.

Can someone help me with this, please?

Petra

You need to set permission on /dev/vcsa too.

BRLTTY is supposed to be run as root. Thereafter, it should attach itself to
any virtual console that you open.

You should add BRLTTY to your system's initialization scripts, or if you only
want it to start once you have logged in, set up the sudo command to invoke it
from your ~/.bash_profile file (or the equivalent if you are using a shell
other than bash).

Debian Installer team monthly meeting minutes (20060429 meeting)

(reply-to: debian-boot)

Debian Installer team meeting number 11 has been held from 16:00UTC to
17:30UTC on Saturday April 29th 2006.

There were about 75 people connected to the channel during the meeting
and 12 of them spoke during the meeting at least once.

The full log of the meeting is available at
http://people.debian.org/~bubulle/d-i/irc-meeting-20060429/log

New busybox
-----------

Bastian Blank has a pending upload for busybox 1.1.2 to replace
current 1.01 in unstable. He would like to have this version in but
this needs deeper testing with D-I.

The new version was announced in
http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/04/msg00542.html but no
testing report has been made since then.

It is suggested that more people test this by building their own D-I
netboot images with this new busybox, before it is uploaded to
unstable.

In general, we want to support 2.4 until the kernel is no longer in

Brltty 3.7.2-3 should enter testing on Thursday. Then I will submit
a corrected patch for integration into d-i. According to past
discussions, there shouldn't be problems left (and several people on
debian-accessibility and carrefourblinux reported installation successes
with my unofficial image).

Answering to myself. It is still not in testing because of "mayr"
mips buildd which keeps brltty in the "Building" state [1] for that
architecture, although the package compiled fine [2]...

Could somebody do something about this?

Thanks,
Samuel

You should send mail to mips <at> buildd.debian.org; they're the only people
who can do something about that.

Etch with braille support?

Hello Samuel,

I've downloaded the unofficial CD for the sarge network instalation from
http://brl.thefreecat.org/mini-sarge.iso.

At the boot prompt I entered the following: install brltty=ht,ttyS0,ge

The instalation went off without any problems and when I rebooted the
computer BRLTTY was started automatically.

Etch was installed but not sarge. Is this intentional?

In my opinion it would be genial if the braille support could be
admitted into the official CD's.

The kernel could be called 'blind' for example.

Is the support of braille displays assigned in the official release? If
not, which reasons are against it?

I'm looking forward to your reply.

Kind regards

Simon

Mmm, my image is probably wrong then. Whether the current
debian-installer can install Sarge is more a
debian-boot <at> lists.debian.org question, actually.

This is pending. We're just waiting for mips buildd admins to at last
sign the 3.7.3-3 package and upload it, so that it can hit testing.

There is no need for a special kernel for brltty. Passing
brltty=parameters is needed for serial devices, but for usb devices you
will just need to boot with the cdrom :)

But I wonder whether for speech we couldn't ask them to have the speakup
kernel on the CD too.

Hi Samuel

Thank's for your reply.

I thought for the use of BRLTTY the framebuffer hasn't to be active.
linux26 debian-installer/framebuffer=false
Or is this only the case for the Sarge-Installer?

What do you have to do to install BRLTTY and that it gets started if you
restart the computer?

I though a few adjustments at the installer would be necessary.

Would it be possible to adapt an official CD for the instalation of
Sarge? If yes, I would be grateful if you could send me any
instructions. I would provide the CD at my server so others can download
it from there.

Kind regards

Simon
