I followed the end of this thread and learn a little bit more from it.
I learned some rudiments of Debian, plus git-buildpackage in this
process. I'll learn more in the next ones, and with this one ore later
on as well.

indeed, this helper creates a shlibs file, which should only be done for
public libraries.

this package has been tried four times and every time we see a different
build error:

#1 (on lebrun):    segfault in gcc
#2 (on schroeder): segfault in python (i.e. scons, the build system)
#3 (on lebrun):    segfault in gcc, but in a different compilation unit as #1
#4 (on schroeder): sigill in gcc
