lca2011 - Early birds closing in 2 days

Greetings all,

If you've been following the linux.conf.au identi.ca & twitter posts,
(and if not, why not do it now?) you'll know that the end of Early
Bird registrations is just days away - two days to be precise.

The Early Bird registrations offer a significant discount on the
regular conference pricing for Fairy Penguin, Professional and
Hobbyist tickets.

lca2011 is shaping up as an exceptional conference, in a long line of
brilliant linux.conf.au's. Along with the Rocketry & Southern Plumbers
miniconf's we have many of the favourites. The line up of
Presentations is breath taking, and we boast Geoff Huston, Eric
Allman, Mark Pesce and Vinton G. Cerf as keynotes.

Take the opportunity to get your Early Bird registrations now, you
wouldn't want to miss out.

Cheers,
Marco

lca2011 Volunteers, we want you! - Hours left of Early Bird regos

Hi Everyone,

lca2011 Volunteers
---------------------------

linux.conf.au is calling for volunteers to assist with the conference
in January of next year.

"lca is primarily about the FOSS community," said Shaun Nykist,
lca2011 director. "Volunteering for an lca conference is a great way
for people to give back to the community which has given us the great
software which we all use. It is also the main reason that will bring
us all together in Brisbane in January 2011."

lca2011 welcomes all those who would like to volunteer their time and
help towards the running of the conference in Brisbane. Helping at a
major conference like lca2011 can be a deeply rewarding experience and
an opportunity to meet some exceptional people. There are a number of
different volunteer roles that you can be involved in, including
administration of the registration desk, operating cameras and
audio-visual gear, and many other technical and non-technical tasks.

Anyone who would like to volunteer may now do so through the
conference website at:

http://lca2011.linux.org.au/register/volunteer

and join the volunteers mailing list at:

http://lists.followtheflow.org/mailman/listinfo/volunteers/

SFD 2010 Report Team Limestone Coast

A big thank you to Linux Australia for providing us with a huge amount of schwag for our Software freedom Day 2010 event. Our event was a huge success, see below for a copy of our report that was sent off to SFD international Board. For those people that wish to see the full report & media that we submitted SFD International Board, it can be downloaded from:- http://ftp.lsclug.org/SFD2010_report_and_media.zip Thanks once again for your support. regards, Robert Farrar co-ordinator Team Limestone Coast Software Freedom Day 2010

Software Freedom Day 2010

Limestone Coast Report

Software Freedom Day 2010 for Team Limestone Coast, Mount Gambier, SA, Australia was a huge event this year, it turned out to be by far the biggest & most successful event that we have held for Software Freedom Day in our 4 year history of holding these events.

Leading up to the day, some of our members were able to discuss Free software and the event on our local Radio station, which added to the existing interest within the community.

On the day, we had a group of 8 volunteers to help out, including local teachers and IT professionals. The event was held in the IT area of the new state of the art Community Library. We were open from 10:00am until 3:30pm, and we had people lining up to get into the venue when we arrived!

Our focus this year was on the following:-

* Open Source Gaming
* Office and Productivity Applications
* Home Networking
* MythTV and XBMC based media centers..

People were able to wander around the various stations on the day, and discover some of the Free software on offer. As in previous years, OpenOffice and the Gimp were favourites, along with the GPL'd games such as Neverball. Our volunteers were on hand to answer questions on a range of topics, explaining the purpose of the event and handing out schwag to the younger visitors. Due to the overwhelming interest from the community, at some points over the day there were line-ups to get into the event of over 30metres.

Hundreds of CDs and DVDs containing TheOpenDisc and Ubuntu were given out, along with information on how to safely access more great Free software on the Internet.

The day was enormously successful, we had well over 500 (the Library estimated 1000, based on door count) people come in over the course of the day, and we were all very pleased with the turnout from the community in support of our event this year.

We also had a heap of schwag provided to us by Linux Australia to give away on the day, a huge thank you goes out to Linux Australia, we put it all to good use & made up show bags to give away to the crowds of people that attended this year.

In consequence of the successful day, the local radio station (5SE-963 AM) has expressed interest in broadcasting a regular show around Free software & we have also put together a FOSS CD/DVD package & book that is available for loan from our new Library, we are also doing the same for all of our Primary & Secondary Schools around our region (47 Schools), these packages will be updated each year inline with Software Freedom Day, giving residents & students of our region access to the latest of FOSS software.

Cloud computing is bollocks (or not?)

We'd like to hold a fun debate during the Freedom in the cloud Miniconf:
"Cloud computing is bollocks"

So if you have an opinion ("bollocks" or "not bollocks") and would like
to share it (probably just a quick 2 minute speech, possibly
improvised), please email us at proposals@... !

Note: facts are entirely optional and strong opinions are more than
welcome :)

(Also, it's not too late to submit proposals for the Freedom in the
cloud Miniconf.)

=== About the Miniconf ===

Whether or not 2011 will be known as the year of the Federated Social
Web remains to be seen, but the cloud is certainly not going away and
we'd like to propose a Miniconf to cater to all cloud enthusiasts.
Specifically, we'd like to solicit proposals from two main groups. The
first one is the hard-core technical cloud engineers who build their
tech on Open Source software. The kind of people who know so much
about tweaking their kernels and scaling their infrastructures that
they could out-Google Google.

The second group of people we'd like to attract are the free network
services and federated social web people. These folks know that the
growth of netbooks and smartphones has meant a great dependence on
centralized network services. But as more and more computing moves
into "the cloud", users and companies are losing direct control over
their data and processes. They see a very high risk to businesses and
individuals.

To submit a proposal:

Re: GNU Linux in the Advertiser Sth. Aust.

It's cool to see stuff like that, even if it is an Ubuntu advertisement...

I wonder if advertising HUMBUG and F/L/OSS in a popular local paper such as MX (handed out to public transport travelers daily) would be worth it.
