LCA2011 Expressions of interest

LCA2010 (this coming January!) is shaping up to be awesome. The CFP is
closed and our team of reviewers have been chained to their desks by
their zookeepr.

Thinking that you'd like to host linux.conf.au in your city? How about
in 2011?

This is a call for expressions of interest in running LCA2011. This
isn't a call for a bid document, just a call for "hey, we're putting
together a team that is interested in running 2011." This is to start
the conversation with the Linux Australia Council and other teams.

Send your expression of interest to council@... by Friday 14th
August 2009.

(Yes, this will be followed by a call for real bids).

LCA2010 Open Programming Languages Miniconf: Call for Presentations now open

The LCA2010 Open Programming Languages Miniconf, to be held at
Linux.conf.au 2010 in January 2010 (either on Monday 18th or Tuesday
19th January), invites presentations about all programming languages
with an Open Source implementation, such as Perl, Python, C, PHP and

Whilst most talks will be specific to a single language, the focus of

amongst programmers of all open programming languages.

Government 2.0 Taskforce - Road Show to all capitals

Hi all,

Thought this might be of interest to people. It's a great opportunity to put
forward your thoughts about FOSS, Open Standards, Open Knowledge, and
open community models, like we've been using for years :)

Please send it around to other people and groups you think might be
interested.

A message from Jacinta Thomler, Government 2.0 Secretariat:

---------------------------

The Government 2.0 Taskforce invites you to an Open Forum

On the 22 June 2009 the Minister for Finance and Deregulation, the Hon.
Lindsay Tanner MP and the Special Minister of State, Senator Joe Ludwig,
announced the formation of a Taskforce (http://gov2.net.au/) to
investigate how the Australian Government can use new 'Web 2.0'
approaches to expand the uses of Commonwealth information and improve
the way government consults and engages with citizens.

The Government 2.0 Taskforce will make recommendations for government
policy and fund projects which offer promise in accelerating the coming
of Government 2.0.
The Taskforce seeks input through a series of open forums, in each
capital city over the next few weeks. The Taskforce is seeking input
from a range of audience groups - government, industry, academics, NGOs
and interested others.

Fwd: IRC Meeting for Tuesday 25th August

For any LUG representatives not on the LugComms mailing list.

Subject: IRC Meeting for Tuesday 25th August
To: lugcomms <at> lists.linux.org.au

Hi All,

Next Tuesday is the regular meeting in #linux-aus-lugs for Australia wide LUGs.
Time is 8 pm Eastern Standard Time : GMT+10. Adjust for your own time-zone :-)

Does anyone have any agenda items?

Last Month, amongst other things, was a discussion on (very rough summary):

1. Software Freedom Day : OpenDay CDs and/or printed blank CDs.
and some discussion of Ubuntu, Fedora, Moblin, OpenCD, OpenEducationCD as alternates.
Also raised the idea of QIMO4KIDS, Knoppix + LXDE, E17 based LiveCD for older machines.

2. Inter-LUG activities

3. an aussie lug podcast

4. Videos of talks by people visiting LUGs

If you want to read up in detail, I sent the log out last month, but I can send to individuals if you let me know.

Make The Move update

Hi all,

It's time to update http://makethemove.net (especially with Windows 7
coming). I can do the content, but I suck at web design.

Any takers?
