I just caught Jon on Channel 7's Sunrise programme.

That's what you do when your presidential term is up - hit the speaking
circuit :)

I have a 70MB export from myth, which I can share, provided I won't get
sued by Ch7 (or Jon ;-)

Let's assume that's 'fair use' as long as we are critiquing it.

I'm happy to host said file, if so shoot me a link.

Microsoft Offer to Australian University Students

Hi everyone,

I'm a student at Monash university, today I received an email from the
University, regarding an offer made by Microsoft to all Australian Uni
students for it's MSOffice 2007 suite.
The main gist of the email is as follows:

"
Microsoft is offering the top of the range Ultimate 2007 version of
Microsoft Office to all Australian university students at a low price
for
a limited time.

This offer is available until 15 May 2008.

What are the options and how much is it?
There are three options. You can:
* buy the product outright for $75.00
* buy the product for 12 months for $25.00. At the end of 12
months
you can pay an additional $50 to purchase the product outright
*       download a free trial.

The recommended retail price for this product is $1150.

Conditions of purchase
* You must use your Monash email address when ordering a copy.
* A password is needed to place an order -- DO NOT use your
Monash
password.

James this is a standard offer. Adelaide Uni students have been offered
MS Office whatever for the past 2 or 3 years and I am sure most of the
38 Australian universities students have the same deal.

In the scheme of things i dont think it makes much difference to be
honest and yes you're right it is a reflection of the marketing power of
the organisation. It would be nice to think that one day, Monash might
at the same time send out another email as a follow up which points out
the existence of the FOSS offerings and/or encourages even those
commercial versions of otherwise FOSS offerings viz StarOffice and Lotus
Notes/IBM's version of OpenOffice.

But it'll be a while before that happens I suspect.

I would think that the Student Council reps on the University Council
ought to be made aware of your reaction and others, if you can find
them, and suggest to them that they might like to bring it up in a
University Council meeting.
