Charging kids a copyright fee for internet usage

Hi all,

"SCHOOLS have warned they will have to turn off the internet if a move by
the nation's copyright collection society forces them to pay a fee every
time a teacher instructs students to browse a website."

http://pipka.org/blog

I think everyone should read this and email the education minister. Details
on my website.

I've written to the minister about the issue and suggested she show
leadership at the top level by dealing with the issue promptly.

Cheers,
Pia

G'day All,

I have just spoken to Lucy and she thanks all of you for your kind thoughts and best
wishes. In talking to Leon, she mentions all of your names, (which I compile as I receive
e-mails and forward through everyday).

Leon still remains sedated, but the swelling is subsiding, which is a good sign. Lucy is
duplicating what the physio does, so Leon is getting twice as much exercise and workout as
someone in this condition would normally get.

It now appears that it may be up to 4 months before a clearer picture emerges of Leon's
condition. After this time, he could be in rehab for up to two years.

Things are not changing as rapidly as earlier this week, so the updates will continue, but
not as frequently. If you still wish periodic messages to get through to Lucy, please feel
free to send them to me and I will forward them through.

Thanks to everyone on behalf of Lucy.

Alex

Here is the latest update as of last night.

Alex

Current update for you. God bless. Chris

I just spoke with Lucy and she asked me to update you on Leon's progress.
Leon was taken off the sedation on Saturday and has been waking up slowly
since then. As you can imagine, this is a slow process because of the nature
of the injuries and the level of morphine he is on. He was put in a
chair/bed
for a while today so he could be in a different position. He required
support, but opened one eye slightly and was able to look at Lucy and move
his head to see. He was responding to pain stimulus on his hands and feet
yesterday, but today he has improved to respond to a more gentle touch on
his
feet, and squeezed people's hands with his when requested (after a few
seconds pause). He still has a tube down his throat, but the assisted
breathing has been turned off - he is now breathing on his own!

Thank you for all the prayers - God is with us and is moving mightily. We
are
leaning on him and are being greatly encouraged by the prayers of people
from
all over the world.

We are excited by his improvements but his situation is still very serious
and
there is need for much prayer for the full recovery of his mind. We have no
definite prognosis of the extent of the damage to his brain, but we are
trusting in the wisdom of God. Your prayers are appreciated.

As you can imagine this is still a very stressful time for Lucy and those of
us close to Leon. Lucy is coping immeasurably better than any of us imagined
she would, but she is doing this by concentrating solely on Leon. Having to
focus on food, children, household chores, etc would stretch her mental and
emotional resources right now, so we appreciate the many many offers of help
in many different ways that have been given. You truly are a wonderful
"family"! I know that God will soon provide the strength needed for Lucy to
resume all her daily duties.

It's hard to believe it has only been 9 days since the accident. It feels
like
a very long time, and the journey has many miles ahead yet. We must have
patience and keep positive, trusting God every step of the way.

Thank you,
Jane

Subject: Leon! woohoo!

Leon was conscious most of the day yesterday (thursday), and very much in
his
own mind!
Yesterday, when I arrived at the hospital, he had been positioned in the
pink
chair again, and was holding his head up with minimum support, and
impatiently jiggling his legs and tapping his fingers, while looking
huntedly
about the room, obviously unhappy with his situation. Through answering
yes/no questions with a nod or head shake, he was able to communicate (quite
emphatically!) that he was very angry, and depressed, and in quite some pain
from his back in the position he was placed, and frustrated about not being
able to speak, or make himself understood when he mouthed words. He let me
know that he didn't want me to leave him, even to go to the toilet, that he
was scared of the prison his body was being, and he wanted to get back on
top
of things, specifically asking for his laptop!

He also made a joke, by grinning and winking at my sister Jane when she said
that how he was conscious again, she wouldn't be holding his hand and
rubbing
his belly anymore! So he is truly Leon, and I am so thankful to God for his
mercy...Leon has not had the past fortnight to work through this, and fall
into the arms of a Loving God, so he will continue to need your prayers for
his emotional and spiritual recovery just as much as for his physical
recovery. I over heard the doctor saying yesterday that "Only Mrs Brooks
believed he was in there, all the clinical signs showed otherwise, a
remarkable recovery" (of his faculties)! I would add to that that Mrs
Lazidis
(Leon's sister) and Mrs Gibbons-Eyre (my sister) also were convinced that he
was "him" inside that lump of unconsious humanity that the medical staff
were
working hard to keep alive... but that only God knows for sure what is going
on!

Lucyxx

Please pray that I can locate Leon's mobile phone...I have mislaid it, maybe
it fell out of my bag while I was at hospital, or getting in or out of
someone's car?

thanks!

Help Me Please - Australia, Open Data, & Web 2.0

Hi all,

I'm presenting at a conference in May in Amsterdam.
http://www.xtech-conference.org/

My paper was accepted on the basis of the following abstract and I now
need to write a full paper and presentation.

I would appreciate your collective help and support with interviews,
references, anecdotes and case studies.

I'll be at linuxworld and CeBIT in Sydney, and am normally in Melbourne.

- Donna

Abstract:
ODF. Our Document Future?

The OpenDocument Format in XML is an important milestone for data. From
clay tablets to papyrus, from the printing press to the typewriter and
on to the personal computer, we have seen a steady progression of the
means of recording, storing and transmitting human thought and history.
We call this information technology.

What does XML and the OpenDocument format mean for people working in the
field of digital preservation. How can governments and business preserve
their precious information for the future?

We find ourselves crying out for a means of sharing information, not
only between people and across time, but also between machines and
across networks and space. We don't want to retype, reprocess and
reformat in endless permutations. We do want to read these files in the
distant future. Not just 5, 50, or 500 years but possibly 5000 years and
so on to the end of time.

But there are no guarantees. Scientists were unable to get data off
tapes from the 1976 Viking landings on Mars because it was in an unknown
format. All was not lost as they tracked down printouts and hired
students to retype everything. The BBC have discovered their 1986
Digital Domesday project almost irretrievable, yet the priceless
original Domesday book from 1086 is still perfectly legible. Digital
Preservation is a big deal.

The National Archive of Australia was one of the first Government
Agencies to actively pursue XML formats for the purposes of digital
preservation. The NAA was one of the founding members of the OASIS
Technical Committee which would go on to standardize the open XML file
format for office applications based on the OpenOffice.org file format.
The National Archive have continued their efforts with the development
of Open Source Projects Xena, Quest and DPR.

This user focussed presentation reports on Australia's contributions to
Digital Preservation efforts, Open Data and the Open Source ecosphere as
well as a look at how the OpenDocument format is being implemented
across Australia.

Root Password Readable in Clear Text with Ubuntu

Hi all,

discovered in Ubuntu Breezy Badger 5.10 earlier today by a visitor on
the Ubuntu Forums that allows anyone to read the root password simply
by opening an installer log file. Apparently the installer fails to
clean its log files and leaves them readable to all users. The bug has
been fixed, and only affects The 5.10 Breezy Badger release. Ubuntu
users, be sure to get the patch right away."

It should also be mentioned that this does not affect those who
dist-upgraded from Hoary. Also the solution is pretty simple. Simply
remove the /var/log/installer/cdebconf/questions.dat file.
