IP Research project

Hi all,

Linux Australia has been invited, along with any interested community
members to participate in a long term IP research project. Linux
Australia is determining how we can support such a project, and see it
is a step forward in solving our IP issues in Australia, hopefully
making a safer and more sane IP situation for developers and Australia
ICT companies, as well as consumers. It is certainly a good opportunity
to get involved and have your say in this area. Check it out, and if
interested, please forward to you LUG, or any other groups you feel
would be relevant. Contact David Vaile for any information, his contact
details are below.

Cheers,
Pia

THE DETAILS:
The Principal Investigator is Graham Greenleaf, Professor of IT Law at
UNSW. He is the architect of AustLII, the world's largest collection of
public-domain legal resources. He has an excellent record of extracting
money from research funds.

He has formed a team comprising the leading thinkers in copyright and
intellectual property law and policy in Australia. He is seeking funding
for a research programme related to your interests in the Open Source
area.

The members of the principal industry partner and sponsor AEShareNet Ltd
have been working with him for several years, particularly in the last
year in developing the November conference on 'Unlocking IP' and now

Old PCs in Sydney

Random Phone Call of the Day: MYOB in Sydney just 'phoned me (in Perth!)
looking for a useful charity to take a few score PCs off their hands.
Dell, mostly P-II 350, 64-128MB of RAM, circa 4GB hard disks,
presumably 14" or 15" CRTs (not discussed).

I referred them to Computer Angels 'coz that's who I'm most familiar
with and they know everyone else, but if y'all can help MYOB to find
new homes for these boxes, give them a whistle.

Cheers; Leon

First Open Source Forum - a success!

Hi all,

Last Wednesday Linux Australia in collaboration with OSIA and Baker &
McKenzie presented the first Open Source Forum. The plan is to run these
every two months tackling challenging opportunities and issues the
Australian Open Source sector.

The first one was on Software Patents. We had around 100 people come,
and many more try to register (the venue could only really hold 80). The
participation was excellent, and many lessons were learnt for the next
one, such as more time is needed :) I'm afraid we didn't get recording
organised in time, and at any rate that wasn't discussed with the
speakers prior to them agreeing to speak. We will aim to record the
event next time. Sorry to all! All the slides will be available from the
LA website as soon as the speakers agree. I'll post when they are up.

We had a large range of attendees, from government, to large
multi-nationals, universities, developers, and of course lawyers. It was
great to se some SLUGgers there, and I hope to see more at other forums
we put on.

The speaker breakdowns are below:

* Patents and Open Source Licences
Derek Neve and John MacPhail, Baker & McKenzie
This talk gave an introduction to software patents from a legal
perspective. It spoke briefly about how the GPL fits in, and about the
clause in the GPL that if a patent is being challenged in court, the GPL
loosely doesn't apply anymore, ie - you can't distribute. Please note
IMNAL :) John spoke about the patents system in Australia, some of the

200411 - Linux Australia News

Hi all,

The last month was again kind of busy. We have one committee member
living in the US for 6 months (be safe Michael!), one committee member
rabidly trying to protect us all from legal foo (hey Rusty!), Andrew is
going to be speaking at the Linux Bangalore conference, Stewart is
coding furiously for the 2005 Linux Australia online elections with
nominations to open soon and I have been running around doing forums and
stuff.

The major news bits are:

FTA and IP issues
-----------------
Linux Australia in collaboration with Open Source Industry Australia and
Baker & McKenzies ran the first Open Source Forum. The breakdown can be
found at
http://lists.linux.org.au/archives/announce/2004-November/msg00000.html
Many thanks to all who contributed and attended! There was a very good
response are we are looking at running them somewhat regularly. Thus far
there has been a call for forums on "Linux on the Desktop",
"Anti-circumvention Legislation", "Open Source Business Methodologies",
and more. If you are interested in helping out, speaking or hosting a
forum, please let us know.

The Linux Australia server was cracked, and some of our websites had the
text "SPYKIDS by guns_1" rather than the usual content. Many many thanks
to Anand, Leon and Jeff, particularly Anand and Leon for getting the
