More opportunities for Linux.Conf.Au attendees!

_Six_ Weeks To Go! Yikes!

What's been happening in the past month for Linux.Conf.Au?

An **awful** lot! A few of the new things include:

o GNOME.conf.au - One of the two major desktop environments in the
free software world has announced its own miniconf for LCA2004.
The infectious enthusiasm of Jeff Waugh has organised speakers such
as hp, jamesh, keithp, gman and msevior to talk on the two days
preceding the main conference. Join the fun and come to this
miniconf - and see first hand jdub's NO PANTS policy.

See http://www.gnome.org/~jdub/2004/gnome.conf.au/ for more details.

o Hackfest - Here's your chance to prove you've got what it takes.
We're going to be holding a programming contest - who can write
the best AI bot to play Tetrinet, a multi-player Tetris game.
Chris Yeoh has won one of these sorts of contests before (LokiHack),
and this time he's organising it for us. What's even better is that
you can start getting involved today - a beta version of the client
library to interface to the tetrinet server is available, so you can
start writing code NOW! (and help us debug that library :)

LiveCD Call for Participation!

Hello everyone,

We're six weeks away from Linux.conf.au and the Inetd LiveCD project
(http://lca2004.linux.org.au/livecd.cgi) is well under way. If you are:

	* experienced in Unix system administration and hackery, or

	* good at writing webpages describing how to run systems, or

	* familiar with testing networks

then we invite you to join Dan Shearer in constructing the Inetd
Live CD in consultation with the speakers at Linux.conf.au. Simply
send an email introducing yourself and what area(s) you're able to
help with to:
	livecd@...

Would *you* base your network on a DNS server written in bash running
under Linux on a Motorola 68000-based system? Perhaps it would be
better running on the 64-bit AMD system under NetBSD? At least
good old favourites like Apache, PHP, KDE and Gnome will be running
in the normal way -- except for where they can't since the development
and stable branches clash, and where they all have to be running
at once in separate computers (<whew> just as well we have User
Mode Linux, and one or two other tricks.)

Choices, choices... come January 12th 2004 at Linux.conf.au you'll
find out which way we went :-)

Open Source Business Network - SA

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/12/03/1070351623658.html

Today, 3 December, marks a new day in the South Australian open source
landscape. After many years of talk and no action, an Open Source Business
Network - SA is being formed.

My initial objectives for the OSBN-SA are to:

 * create a strong, business focussed industry cluster to support open
source businesses and issues in South Australia

 * promote open source as a viable primary solution to businesses and
individuals as well as an alternative solution for those who are
currently using a non-open source solution

These objectives, aims and the means to achieve the objectives and aims
will be set by the participants of the industry cluster. I consider the
above two aims important and I am sure businesses in SA can think of many

NSW Society for Computers and the Law

Hi all,

Last night I gave a short speech to the NSW Society for Computers and
the Law. An interesting group that were originally a SIG of ACS. We had
3 speakers there, Brendan Scott (a lawyer specialising in Open Source)
spoke on client copyright, I spoke on what open source is functionally
and why businesses are interested in it, then Paul Kangro from Novell
did a spiel about why they are interested in Open Source and what they
are up to.

It was a great night, and they are an interesting society. For anyone
interested check out http://nswscl.org.au/

Cheers,
Pia

[link] How to Misunderstand Open Source Software Development

    http://www.consultingtimes.com/ossdev.html

How does one explain a "bad rap", especially one that isn't
deserved? Open Source Software development suffers from
widespread misunderstandings in the media from myths, false
claims and disinformation. As a commercial software program
and development manager, I view Open Source Software methods
as simply a way to build applications. It happens to be the
    most efficient one.

Companies spread falsehoods about Open Source methods of
development out of fear that it threatens their revenue
stream. I saw this first hand in a Senate committee meeting
when a member of the BSA testified against a Bill I supported.
Others simply conjure up images of wild-eyed hackers breaking
into computer systems and writing bugs. Simply put, anyone
under that impression suffers from hysterical propaganda.

    [...]

This article intends to clear up some misconceptions and can
help people transition from a closed development environment
into an open one that shortens time to market while cutting
costs. I would like you to walk away from reading this
article with the notion that Open Source Software bears a
    mark of professionalism.

Cheers; Leon

linux.conf.au 2005

Hi,

One of the outcomes of todays Linux Australia committee meeting was
agreement on the venue of linux.conf.au 2005.

To avoid overshadowing the fantastic plans the Adelaide guys have for
2004, the details of the '05 event won't be announced until LCA 2004 is
underway.

If you're interested in assisting with the 2005 event, or organising
subsequent ones, there will be a linux.conf.au organisation Fixit (aka
BOF) at the Adelaide event. Details will appear here
http://lca2004.linux.org.au/fixit.cgi

Cheers,
Hugh

for the Linux Australia committee.

Oh, so it really is going to be held in the Australian Antarctic
Territory?

Seeing we don't know where it is, it's difficult to say how much we can
help ;-P

Constitution Draft IV

Basically added 'Life Member' in place of 'Permanent Mamber', added
'Honorary Life Member', and added '20 persons or 20 per cent' as the
number of members required to call an SGM.
