Re: Nvidia drivers/monitor probing

Most other dist work fine with the Nvidia cards. I have an AGP RIVA128. Works great with VectorLinux and Redhat. RHL 8.0 has an outstanding video detection during setup. It found the card and selected the correct driver and does a fairly decent job probing the monitor (I usually manually select the driver/settings). Why can't Ark be like this?!? The only problem I have with it is that it has improper monitor settings which prevent me from using Ark.

Hey All, ake a look at some bashing of Arklinux

I replied ( semgeb ) homer simpson avatar :)

Since Ark is intended for newbies i think it would be wise to explain what
is alpha stage to them on the site, it seems that they either don't read or
understand what it is.

gcc wrapper

While trying to use ccache and distcc I had the idea to make a gcc wrapper in
Ark Linux.
that would be, rename gcc to gcc.bin and the same with g++ and make some bash
scripts as gcc and g++ that would be wrappers that would check for
configurations in /etc/ (/etc/sysconfig ?) if ccache and/or distcc should be
used. By default, it shouldn't use them, but turning ccache and distcc
support on would be very easy.
What do you think about this ? what would be the drawbacks ?
Thanks.

Re: don't people just read?!?

Erm.. I'm thinkin it would have been better to phrase something to seem
more educational than condescending. You have to remember that this guy
is the sort of person we're aiming to support when we go live.. and if
he was unable to find an explanation on the Arklinux website for what an
'Alpha' release means, then we need to make sure we define the
differences VISIBLY, so the general public understands.

Just remember.. Arklinux is intended to cater to desktop users who
USUALLY are not POWER users and do not understand much of the jargon we
throw around in our everyday lives. My mother would never have had any
idea what an Alpha release is.. and she's the exact type of person who
makes up our target audience.

An example of what we MIGHT have said would be:
--------------------------------------------------------
In all fairness, It would probably be helpful to the average beginner to
explain the difference between alpha/beta/production releases when it
comes to software..

Alpha releases are the very beginnings of a product. They tend to be
very unstable and are guaranteed to change frequently, and drastically.
The intended audience is limited to developers, testers, and bug fixers.
(If Arklinux's site does not point out clearly that this was an Alpha
release, then they should likely work toward clarifying this) In some
cases there is likely to be pieces of general functionality which are
not completely implemented yet.

Beta releases come after the Alpha release has become basically stable.
All functionality should now be implemented. Changes will come less
frequently, and will tend to be less drastic when they come. Usually
they involve bug fixes more than anything. Experienced end-users,
developers, testers, and bug fixers are the target audience for Beta
releases.

Production releases are the real thing, the final product. They are
intended for everyone to make use of.

If you see a filename with 'alpha' in it, this is either an alpha
release, or it's built to run on an 'Alpha' platform... and if you've
got a PC, it's definitely not an Alpha platform ;)

---------------
It is far better to educate than to argue
---------------

Re: web structure

I think it would be great if the forum could be the same as the mailing lists
(someone said usenet too ?), is that posible ?
Thanks.

MPlayer GUI

Yesterday I asked on IRC how switch the mplayer GUI on...
Now I have the answer: recompile with --gui-enable option...
MPlayer tells that is compiled "with no GUI".
Don't you think it's not good idea in Linux for newbies?

We're using kplayer (or was it kmplayer) as a GUI for mplayer. Does mplayer
provide one ? I bet it is GTK ;)

It seems to be a problem linking with Xft (1) instead of Xft2 or something
like that, any idea how to solve it ?
Thank you.

The opposite. Qt is trying to link with Xft2, but we use Xft1 because it's
significantly faster.
Check our Qt source rpm for the fix for Qt's build system.
