Hello, I'm Pupeno

Hello, I'm Pupeno, offically known as José Pablo Ezequiel Fernández.
I'm currently a Mandrake user and although I think that's the best
distribution out there fore newbies, I think a lot is missing and I think Ark
Linux may be the answer.
I'm also a KDE developer (co-maintainer of KDE Accessibility) and I have some
ideas of how a distribution should be to be really user friendly and I'd like
to share it with you and if you want, contribute in the design, and maybe, in
the development too.
I'm currently slowly (56k) downloading the alpha6 iso image to test it and
after that, I'll be able to give you my comments.
I'm also often in FreeNode in #kde, #kde-devel, #kde-accessibility, etc and I
will now, go to #arklinux too, so we can talk there if you want.
Is there any guidelines, text, documentation or something of how Ark Linux
should be ?
Thanks.

getting involved.

Hi.

I read the news about arklinux on both slashdot and osnews. What
actually triggered me to investigate it was the comments on slashdot
made by bero.

I am a programmer and would like to get involved. I wasn't able to
locate any list archives or anything so i dont really know anything
much about the direction, organization, whats lacking, etc.

I guess i really should start out by downloading it and trying it, which
i will do the next time im at work. But i figured it wouldnt hurt to
collect information and getting introduced beforehand.

Support page problem

The "answer" to the question about installing from a floppy is no answer
at all.

Could someone please send the actual answer to the list and fix the
support page?

A clip from the page follows:

# How do I install Ark Linux on a system with a non-bootable CD_ROM? Will
boot floppy images be made available? Or ftp/http installers be available?

This problem has been fixed.
But since it depends on bug #0 (world is full of stupid ppl) it'll probably
show up again... thanks for reporting.

Re: Support page problem

But what about those of us that really want to know the answer to the
question? I have an older system that cannot boot to the CD-ROM (BIOS
doesn't support it) and I want to give Ark a try. Do you have a boot floppy
image available?

Linux

Hi,

I installed ArkLinux ... very easy red hat based distro for idiots.
Unfortunately it boots directly into a GUI but at a screen resolution
higher than my Samsung MultiSync Monitor can support. I can 'break out'
of the GUI to the "shell" command line deal but what I need to know is
where to go to edit the config file that sets the screen resolution.

Any of you Linux Gurus' know or can guess at what I should look for ?
Looks like I'm gonna need a Linux in a Nutshell Book .......

Hardware: ATI All in Wonder AGP (rage128 chipset) , Abit K7G w/duron 700
, 256 megs ram

Yes, the "let anyone write" approach to support turns out not to work.
There are too many people who intentionally wrote in bad answers (and
questions).
We've decided to take the support page down for now, replacing it with an
FAQ (still in development).

The answer is that at the moment, you can't install without a bootable
CD-ROM drive - our boot image is 2.88 MB (doesn't fit into 1.44 MB because
of the large amount of drivers).

Of course, there are several possible ways to go about creating a smaller
image (all of them involve editing the creation scripts) - the easiest is
probably just insisting that every CD-ROM is IDE, and all graphics cards
are VESA compliant (-> remove all other CD and fb drivers).

I currently don't have much time - are there any other volunteers to do
this?

Hmm... This is odd, because it boots to 1024x768, and installation runs in
1024x768 too.

If not, chances are you've found a bug in the X configuration part of the
installer. If you can, please send me the XF86Config file the installer
generated for you and one that works for your hardware. (Chances are the
installer misdetected the timings for your monitor. Take a look at the
"HorizSync" and "VertRefresh" lines in the config file.)

The file you want to edit is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
A fairly easy to use editor in text mode is "nano".

GRUB Problems...

Hi,
Has anyone here run into problems getting Grub to boot Ark? I installed Ark
the end of a large hard disk (120 GB), and it seems to have installed Grub
into the MBR alright, but all I get is a text based "grub shell" (not sure if
that is the right name for it) that won't boot Ark (or give any indication
how to).

I tried fiddling around, and it seemed to happily locate the kernel of
Mandrake Linux (installed closer to the beginning of the the drive), but even
when it picked that Kernel, the end result was a Kernel panic.

  Ideas?

  Thanks,
       Tim
