I've asked pacman to ignore gcc but it then wants to install it to
satisfy the grip/id3lib upgrade.  I would have expected a warning and
have it drop grip.  I would understand if I had said pacman -S grip. 
Otherwise if there had been 100 packages to upgrade I might have not
noticed the gcc upgrade.

It's a design bug on my part.  Version-specific dependencies override
IgnorePkg, which is probably not the expected behaviour for anyone but
me.

network switch on laptop

Hi

Background:
I am switching my laptop from a 100 MB Ethernet  LAN, at home, to a modem at  
the 'week hotel'. I am about to give up on the Linux touch on modem and 
reformatted my drive and installed Microsoft XP to have a secure connection 
during the week.

My Lan has a MAC address locking so I used to jump back and forth to 'init 1' 
and 'init 3' with ifconfig to fix that. From to day that is not possible any 
longer, I get a complete hang when trying to enter init 1.
Used ifconfig down, hw change and network start to get out.

I have tried the slmodem and from the wiki way to start it as ppp_generic and 
slamr.

Would like to havea step by step lesson from someone with a Acer TravelMate 
243xc, on how to change from eth0 to modem.

Ext2-Fs Warning Check line check time reached running E2fsch recommended.
Otherwise everything else works fine.

Q1.   CompaDeskpro celeron 500 mhz 686

    6 Gig HD Partitions are :
         512 Mb - Fat32  (type 0B)  actual size 510.94
        256 Mb - Linux swap (type 82) actual size 255.47
        the Balance - Linux        (type 83) actual size 5682.22
        The only way I can break out of the swapon loop is remove my
    Fat32 partition..

Q2. Does the celeron overclocking  cause any problems

Q3. Where do I find the log file outputs, especially from "hwd"

Any advice appreciated

Have you tried reformatting the swap partition? Sometimes they go weird. 
Make sure its umounted first tho, might wanna do it with a live cd to be 
extra safe, make sure know the naming scheme of your partitions as well, 
wouldnt wanna format the wrong one :o

I always have to initialize swap myself when installing Arch, - it's
just one of those quirks that makes Arch, Arch ;) With no
install-problems like that installation wouldn't be any fun :D

Uh. I'm actually answering the wrong thing. Ah, anyway I didn't really
understand the post either. - You meant e2fsck and not e2fsch, or?

Most log files lurk in /var/log - but maybe they're nonexsistant since
you can't find them there?

hylafax - faxaddmodem - glibc

Hylafax package needs to be updated as there is a programming bug in
faxaddmodem :

Now we are going to probe the tty port to figure out the type
of modem that is attached.  This takes a few seconds, so be patient.
Note that if you do not have the modem cabled to the port, or the
modem is turned off, this may hang (just go and cable up the modem
or turn it on, or whatever).

Probing for best speed to talk to modem: 38400 OK.
/usr/sbin/faxaddmodem: line 896: 0: command not found

Next,  there is also a bug  in the setup which can't find grep . See bug
report : Task #1198 — hylafax needs rebuild and update if possible
 .
Which is assigned to Gregor Ibic (gregor.ibic).

Next, when compiling hylafax from source it fails on strftime dependency
. IIRC  this is part of Glibc .

Checking for PAM (Pluggable Authentication Module) support
... found. Enabling PAM support
Looks like -lcrypt is needed for crypt.

kde install

Hi

I am new to arch linux. After installation when I tried to install kde, i 
get the following error
error: xorg conflicts with xfree86

Could someone help me out.
