strange mail behavior

Hi all, I have a number of identical virtual Linux machines (All RedHat Enterprise AS release 4
(Nahant Update 8)) and on one of them, invoking the 'mail' command generates an error, although the
command itself gets executed correctly. This is what I mean:

[root <at> overlook mail]# ls|mail -s "test" ycsapo <at> mines.edu
Unknown command: ""

But I do receive the message. To compare, here's the same thing on one of the other boxes:

[root <at> trailhead ycsapo]# ls|mail -s "test" ycsapo <at> mines.edu
Null message body; hope that's ok

And I also receive the message. By the way, I see the same thing even if I invoke mail all by itself
with no params.

I can't find a difference in configuration between the boxes. Any ideas where to look?

Thanks

Yuri

Re: strange mail behavior

Hi,

Does /var/log/mail.log say something useful ?

Do you have either a ~/.mailrc file or a /etc/mail.rc file containing an
error?

Marshall, that did it! Somehow my /etc/mail.rc ended up replaced by a tarball of /etc/mail. I bet
it's autocompletion playing its tricks again...

Problem solved, thanks!

Strange problem with scanner

Hi,

I have a mail server to which several Kyocera multifunction
scanner/printers are connected. When a document is scanned, these
devices can mail the scanned image through a mail account at the
server. They each include a mail client. The problem is that they all
complain about being unable to find the mail server. This happens at
totally unexpected times and then, they suddenly start working again,
as they normally have. The failure does not have a pattern: it may
happen once a month and twice in a single week or day.

Does any of you have an idea of what this problem might be, or have
run across a similar situation?

Thanks
Gerardo

Unless there's something relevant in the log files, I wouldn't waste
time trying to debug this through trial-and-error.

Use tcpdump (or similar) to monitor all traffic to/from the devices
For TCP, only log packets with the SYN or FIN flags (to avoid filling
the logs with bulk data transfers), but any non-TCP (including non-IP)
packets should be logged.
