VRRP WG Last Call: draft-ietf-vrrp-ipv6-spec-07.txt

Hi All,

The chairs think that the VRRPv3 draft is mature
enough to start a WG LC.  

This email starts a 2 week VRRP Working Group Last 
Call on the following draft:

    Title         : Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol for IPv6
    Author        : R. Hinden
    Filename      : draft-ietf-vrrp-ipv6-spec-07.txt
    Pages         : 31

The draft is planned to be advanced as a Proposed Standard.

Please send the comments to vrrp <at> ietf.org.

The Last Call will end on Oct. 18th 2004.

Comments on draft-ietf-vrrp-unified-mib-01.txt

Kalyan,

I have the following comments.

In the diagram on the line of IP addresses for the virtual routers there is
a superfluous "|" following IP A.  Also on the line of host IP addresses
H4's IP B is missing a ")".

There needs to be some consistency with the interfaces shown in the diagram
and displayed in the tables.  Interfaces 3 and 4 should be added to the
diagram and the tables updated accordingly.

In the VrId textual convention I'm not what the second sentence adds to the
definition considering that VRRPv3 is supported as well.

Several typos on deprecated:
Top of Page 9 "  --  Depricated VRRP Oper Table"
Page 15 "--  Drprecated VRRP Associated IP Address Table"

FW: VRRPv6 Draft 7 Inconsistencies

Hi Bob,

Sorry for the two copies, I don't think the first will make it to the
mailing list.

These comments might be a little late, but I have a few questions about VRRP
for IPv6 Internet Draft 7.

1) In section 6.4.2 it states that when the Master_Down_Timer fires a backup
virtual router should join the Solicited-node multicast address for all of
its IPv6 addresses, but in section 6.4.3 it states that a Master router must
be a member for the link local address.  Is there a subtle distinction I'm
missing here based around the "must"?  It seems that the virtual router
ought to become a member for all its IP addresses.

2) Conversely, in section 6.4.3 it states that the master must respond to
neighbor solicitation messages for its IPv6 addresses, but in section 6.4.2
when the Master_Down_Timer fires an unsolicited neighbor advertisement is
only sent for the link local address of the virtual router.  Shouldn't an
advertisement be sent for all the virtual router's IPv6 addresses?

3) The second paragraph of section 7.4 says that the spec tells how to
resolve the VRRP routers IPv6 link local address into the virtual router MAC
but after several readings of the spec I'm struggling with what the virtual
router's link local address is supposed to look like.  The preceeding
paragraph tells us what an IPv6 router cannot do to generate an interface
address, but could the virtual router's link local address be created by
generating an Interface Identifier from the virtual router mac?  The draft
doesn't say.  Obviously for an IP address owner this is not the case, but a
backup must obtain the virtual router's link local address through a
