Progress on Drafts

Folks,

I spoke with Dave Kessens, Ops AD, yesterday and he approved the changes I
proposed to address his Discuss issue on draft-ietf-seamoby-ctp-10.txt, so
we are go for resubmitting the draft for IESG approval. I've put the
modifications into the draft and sent it to John Loughney to nroff and post,
which he will do next week when he is home (we are both now in San Diego for
IETF 60). draft-ietf-seamoby-ctp-11.txt should appear when the gate opens
(and I believe John will try to post it somewhere for people to look at in
the interim).

For draft-ietf-seamoby-card-protocol-08.txt, the following changes were
made:

1) I resolved Joel's Disucss comment by changing the units of length in all
the Seamoby sub-options to be the same, units of 8 octets. This affected
Section 5.1.2 and the 5.1.3 subsections, where the sub-options are
described.

2) I modified the Trust Anchor and Router Certificate options to include two
new fields All Components and Component to allow a MN to request individual
certificates within a certificate chain, in case they are not retransmitted.
This change was added to the SEND spec after IESG comment about being able
to perform incremental retransmission rather than have to retransmit the
entire chain. This affected Sections 5.1.3.6 and 5.1.3.7 and Section 6.4.

3) I modified the boiler plate at the beginning and end to match RFC 3668,
since I've heard that drafts are getting bounced if they don't match.

I've posted the result at

A few questions on draft-ietf-seamoby-ctp-10.txt

Dear authors,

I've just read the draft and am new to the list, so sorry if these questions
have already been talked about:

1. Last paragraph of 2.5.3:

For predictive handover, the pAR SHOULD keep track of the CTAR
sequence number and cache the CTD message until receiving either a
CTDR message for the MN's previous IP address from the "pAR",
indicating that the context transfer was successful, or until
   "CT_MAX_HANDOVER_TIME" expires. ...

   Should the "pAR" be "nAR"?
   Should the "CT_MAX_HANDOVER_TIME" be "CT_MAX_TRANSFER_TIME"?
   (according to section 4)

2. Second paragraph of 2.5.6

... pAR drops the context after "CTP_MAX_TRANSFER_TIME". The sequence
number is
   not used in reactive transfer.

   Should the "CTP_MAX_TRANSFER_TIME" be "CT_MAX_TRANSFER_TIME"?
   (according to section 4)

3. Second paragraph of 3.2

... The initial retransmission occurs after a "CTP_REQUEST_RETRY" wait
period.Retransmissions MUST be made with exponentially increasing wait

I-D ACTION:draft-ietf-seamoby-ctp-11.txt

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Context Transfer, Handoff Candidate Discovery, and Dormant Mode Host
Alerting Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Context Transfer Protocol
	Author(s)	: J. Loughney, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-seamoby-ctp-11.txt
	Pages : 33
	Date : 2004-8-12

This document presents a context transfer protocol that enables
authorized context transfers. Context transfers allow better support
for node based mobility so that the applications running on mobile
nodes can operate with minimal disruption. Key objectives are to
reduce latency, packet losses and avoiding re-initiation of signaling
to and from the mobile node.

use of CTP for PANA: first issue

Hi all,

we try to use CTP to transfer PANA context between PANA Authentication
Agent (PAA). We think that this could enhance handover performance in
mobile environments where PANA could be used.
(cf. draft-bournelle-pana-ctp-00.txt).

However, it appears that it is very difficult to use CTP "as is" for
PANA. As an example, in our proposal, the transfer occurs between PAAs.

>From draft-ietf-pana-pana-05.txt
"
PANA Authentication Agent (PAA):

The protocol entity in the access network side whose responsibility
is to verify the credentials provided by a PANA client and grant network
access service to the device associated with the client and identified
by a DI. Note the authentication and authorization procedure can,
according to the EAP model, be also offloaded to the backend AAA
infrastructure.
"

So the PAA is not necessarily an access router.

In CTP, the transfer occurs between access routers.

So we are facing a sort of conflict and we would like to get
feedback/comments from the seamoby wg for this issue.

 Thanks for your help,

Re: use of CTP for PANA: first issue

CTP is an experimental draft. There's no reason why it can't be modified
prior to resubmission for PS.

As soon as the IESG agrees to publication, I'd like to start discussion in
MOBOPTS about modifications to make it suitable for PS.

Re: further comments on CARD version 8

Marco,

Many thanks for your detailed comments. This is the kind of review that
really helps improve the quality of IETF documents.
Most of the comments were editorial and I incorporated them without change.

There were two technical comments:

> Question: How does the MN know about a lost message in a sequence of

> retransmitted?

Good question.

I added back in the description of the L-flag. It is set on the last message
of a multi-message reply. In addition, I added the following text to Section
4.2.1:

A MN uses exponential backoff to retransmit the CARD Request
in the event a CARD Reply is not received within CARD_REQUEST_RETRY
seconds. The retransmitted CARD Request MUST have the same sequence
number
as the original. With the exception of certification paths, which are
large by nature, an
AR SHOULD attempt to limit the information in a CARD Reply to a single
message.
Should that not be possible, the AR MAY send the reply in multiple
messages. The

CTP Draft will be published!!!!!!

Folks,

This means that the Seamoby CTP draft will be published!!!!!! Hooray!!!

We are close to finishing our charter, at which point we can shut down the
Working Group.

All we need to do is finish the CARD draft. Marco is currently on vacation
and has asked for some time to be able to review the CARD draft before
resubmitting it to the IESG. If anybody else has comments, please send them.
The latest CARD draft is at:

Re: CTP Draft will be published!!!!!!

Hi Jim,

many thanks to you for shepherding this document
from "fading away".

Well, after over 4 years, this is published. Thanks to
all those who contributed. I hope we can take up the
draft in Mobopts and progress it further.

Regards,
