Evaluation on Modeling Languages for Generic Network Management Data Models

Hello,

We have uploaded an Internet draft about data modeling for
network management. It can be found here:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-xiao-evaluate-dml-00.txt

We are Debao Xiao and Hui Xu. Debao Xiao is a professor at
Institute of Computer Network and Communication, HuaZhong
Normal University (www.ccnu.edu.cn) and Hui Xu is his doctor
candidate. Professor Xiao has many years of experience
in the area of network management and we are now working in
a research project (funded by both the key scientific and
technological project of Wuhan city in P. R. China and
the key scientific and technological project of Hubei province
in P.R. China) about next generation network management and
security management.

In some scenarios, the multiplicity of network management models
implies the use of multiple management data modeling languages,
which model the resources to be managed. Each language differs in
the level of various capabilities and expressiveness, most of
which are not easily measured. One of the activities in this project
has then been to address the problem about how to establish a
framework of evaluation to compare different management data modeling
languages based on a set of criteria.

Another aim of our project is to prospect the essentail features of
future data modeling language based on proposed framework of evaluation,
since existing ones have drawbacks of different levels, which hinder
them in adapting to the requirements of next generation network management.

We have demonstrated the most important part of our proposed criteria in
this draft, which are modeling approaches, expressiveness, readability,
interoperability, extensibility and others, and have also presented some
perspectives on developing future data modeling languages for next
generation network management, possibly integrating existing ones. The
characteristics of existing data modeling languages are then summarized
through comparison based on given criteria for evaluation.

We hope our work can contribute to any future work on
data modeling for next generation network management.

If there is significant interest, we would be happy to give
a presentation of this Internet draft in Wuhan, P. R. China.

Best regards,
Debao Xiao and Hui Xu

RE: BOF: Applications Performance Management (APM) BOF

Hi Daryl,

Thanks for your comments, here's the on-list response.
(Now that the drafts are out-there, it can be more complete.
We've exchanged some messages off list, so you knew this was coming.)

At 11:23 AM 6/20/2007, Daryl Malas wrote:

The APM agenda lists more than two now:
http://www3.ietf.org/proceedings/07jul/agenda/apm.txt

- draft-malas-performance-metrics-07.txt
- draft-venna-ippm-app-loss-metrics-00.txt
- draft-ietf-avt-rtcpxr-video-01.txt
- draft-ietf-avt-rtcpxr-audio-00.txt
- draft-ietf-avt-rtcphr-01.txt
- draft-xie-ccamp-lsp-dppm-01.txt
- draft-kikuchi-passive-measure-00.txt

IDR Stability Performance (draft?)
(There is a Liaison statement on this topic, at least:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/liaison/237/ )

>Unfortunately, I don't think this type

It's a valid concern. Performance metric definition has never
been "sexy". The work in IPPM and BMWG is carried out by
small but dedicated core groups, and a healthy influx of new people
with work proposals. Can this "performance community" sustain a
third chartered activity? That's what we hope to learn in the BOF.
However, it seems to me that forming a working group would tend to
increase the visibility (more so than an APM Directorate),
if this move is warranted.

>On the flip side, I

In either case (WG or directorate), it would be a necessary step
to have the proposal reviewed by the associated protocol development
WG, and then develop the draft(s) in partnership with the protocol
experts.

OPS Area Office Hours

I apologize for the cross-posting, which is definitely intentional in
this case.

We remind everybody that the OPS Area Directors will be waiting for you
to come at the office hours to discuss current and future work in the
area and any other IETF related business.

The office hours will happen in the IESG meeting room PDR-4 (standing
for Private Dining Room I guess) at the 3rd floor in the Palmer House
and the schedule is as follows:

Monday 9:00AM to 11:30AM
Wednesday 4:10PM to 5:00PM
Thursday 4:10PM to 5:00PM

See you there.

REMINDER: Jabber, Presentations and Meeting Reports

Hi,

Allowing for remote participation is an important opportunity for the
IETF WGs and BOFs to allow people who cannot make it to the meeting
follow and participate in the discussions. Please make sure that
presentations are loaded on the meeting materials web pages and that
there is a jabber notes taker at each meeting. It is OK for the jabber
notes to be sparse if there is nobody in the jabber room, but if there
are remote participants who listen to the audio feed and want to provide
feedback we should be able to allow this.

Also please send to the ADs a one paragraph note at the end of the
meeting with a short description of principal events, decisions and
action items from the meeting.

Thanks and Regards,

Ron and Dan

Missing the OPS Hour

I need to extend an apology for not making it to the OPS Open Hour to
anybody who showed up in the room that was announced. The APM BOF in our
area ran late, and when Ron and me got to the hallway of the Salons we
were welcome by a couple of people waiting for us. We entered one of the
Salon room believing that this is Salon 4, actually a third OPS fellow
was waiting for us there, and only at the end of the allocated time we
realized that we had been all this time in the wrong meeting room. We
caught at the end only with one of the folks waiting for us in Salon 4.

Folks who still have time and need to talk with us please use the last
open hour slot in the week tomorrow Thursday between 4:10 and 5PM in
room PDR-4, or catch us in the hallways at any time.
