PWG-ANNOUNCE> Updated - PWG MIB Numbers Registry (3 April 2008)

Hi,

Based on the request of Rick Landau (PDM WG Chair) and the approval of
Harry Lewis
(PWG Secretary) and the PWG Steering Committee today, I have updated the PWG
MIB Numbers Registry at:

  ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/general/process/pwg-mib-numbers-20080403.txt

  ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/registry/pwg-mib-numbers.txt

Added the following lines to the normative OID registry:

PWG Projector Display MIB (work-in-progress)
-- { enterprises pwg(2699) mibs(1) projectorDisplayMIB(4) } -- reserved
    { enterprises pwg(2699) experimental(2) projectorDisplayMIB(4) }

And based on formal approval of the PWG Imaging System State and Counter MIB v2
(PWG 5106.3-2008), revised the following lines in the normative OID registry:

PWG Imaging Counter MIB (PWG 5106.3, March 2008, or successor)
    { enterprises pwg(2699) mibs(1) imagingCounterMIB(3) }

Cheers,
- Ira

PWG-ANNOUNCE> Fwd: FYI: Unicode 5.1 Released

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Rick McGowan <rick <at> unicode.org>
Date: Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 3:54 PM
Subject: Unicode 5.1 Released
To: unicode <at> unicode.org

The Unicode Consortium is pleased to announce the release of Unicode 5.1.
This release contains over 100,000 characters, and provides significant
additions and improvements that extend text processing for software
worldwide. Some of the key features are: increased security in data
exchange, significant character additions for Indic and South East Asian
scripts, expanded identifier specifications for Indic and Arabic scripts,
improvements in the processing of Tamil and other Indic scripts,
linebreaking conformance relaxation for HTML and other protocols,
strengthened normalization stability, new case pair stability,
 plus others given below.

The Version 5.1.0 data files and documentation are final and posted on the
Unicode site. In addition to updated existing files, implementers will
find new test data files (for example, for linebreaking) and new XML data
files that encapsulate all of the Unicode character properties. For
details, see the page for Unicode 5.1.0 at
 http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode5.1.0/.

A major feature of Unicode 5.1.0 is the enabling of ideographic variation
sequences. These sequences allow standardized representation of glyphic
variants needed for Japanese, Chinese, and Korean text. The first
registered collection, from Adobe Systems, is now available at
 http://www.unicode.org/ivd/.

IPP> Spreadsheet for Optional IPPv2 Attributes

I have added the proposed spreadsheet for the IPP Optional Attributes at:

   ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/ipp/ippv2-docs/IPP-OPTIONAL-OPS-PRIORITY.doc

Everyone is encouraged to provide an input as to the recommended priority
for each, currrently optional attrribute, to be mandatory for IPPv2.
Return your recommendation directly to me and I will add the data to the
spreadsheet. This will be a topic of discussion at the PWG meeting next
week.

Priority codes are:
      A = Essential
B = Useful, but not critical
      C = Not necessary

IPP> Spreadsheet for Optional IPPv2 OPERATIONS

Hi,

Corrected subject line - this spreadsheet addresses ONLY operations and does
not (thanks goodness) address optional attributes.

The CUPS and Novell iPrint implementation lists are good sources for justifying
the requirement for optional operations (I've recently been thinking about this
topic for Samsung).

Printer vendors - please look at your own implementations and think about
your votes carefully.

Raising ANY optional operations to required for IPPv2 profiles (especially
the lowest IPP/2.0 level for basic workgroup printers) would be unwise.
For example, although Pause-Printer and Resume-Printer are very widely
implemented, they are NOT universally implemented.

I suggest that the votes in this spreadsheet should be not just A/B/C but
A-2.1, etc. That is, the level at which an optional operation becomes
required.

I also suggest that we don't make ANY originally optional operation
required for the lowest IPP/2.0 level - otherwise, the standard will
probably be voted down.

Cheers,
- Ira

IPP> Major defect in IPPv2 SOW - prototype AFTER approval

Hi,

Topic for PWG F2F next week during IPP WG session.

I was just reading the SOW for the IPPv2 project.

This SOW contains a serious violation of the PWG Process/2.0.

In the Definition Stage:

ATTRIB-2 Stable draft document – Q3 2008.
ATTRIB-3 Document ready for PWG approval – Q4 2008.

In the Implementation Stage:

PROT-1 Prototype implementations. – Q2 2009

But a PWG working draft MUST NOT be labeled 'Stable'
until AFTER successful prototyping.

Further, a PWG working draft MUST NOT enter PWG Last Call
and subsequent PWG Formal Approval until AFTER successful
prototyping.

This needs to be fixed. The one PWG standard ever approved
without prototyping (the Abstract Counter Spec) proved to have
a serious technical error - the PWG Steering Committee should
never go down this road again.

A less important error is that I originally volunteered to be an
