[IPFIX] Template Withdrawal Message and TCP

Dear all,

While working on the implementation guidelines draft, Paul Aitken discovered the following problem: the protocol draft doesn't specify what to do for template withdrawal message when TCP is the transport protocol.

What's currently in the draft:
- section 10.2.4.4 "template management" in case of SCTP
"When the transport protocol is SCTP the default Template Management described in Section 8 is used."
This points to "The Template Withdraw Message MUST be sent on the SCTP stream zero with full reliability." in section 8
- section 10.3.6 "template management" in case of UDP
"Template Withdrawal Messages SHOULD NOT be sent over UDP."
- but there is not mention of the "template withdrawal message in the section 10.4.2.2 "template management" for TCP

Proposed text to be added in section 10.4.2.2 "template management" for TCP:
"The Templates that are not used anymore SHOULD be deleted.  Before reusing a Template ID, the Template MUST be deleted.  In order to delete an allocated Template, the Template is withdrawn through the use of a Template Withdrawal Message over the TCP connection."

Any objections on this clarifying sentence?

Regards, Paul and Benoit.

Sounds fine and logical and was actually the thing I assumed would be
the case ;)

Good catch Paul!

I-D ACTION:draft-ietf-ipfix-implementation-guidelines-00.txt

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Flow Information Export Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : IPFIX Implementation Guidelines
	Author(s)	: E. Boschi, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ipfix-implementation-guidelines-00.txt
	Pages : 32
	Date : 2006-9-5

The IP Flow Information eXport (IPFIX) protocol defines how IP Flow
information can be exported from routers, measurement probes or
other devices. This document provides guidelines for the
implementation and use of the IPFIX protocol. Several sets of
guidelines address template management, transport-specific issues,
implementation of exporting and collecting processes and IPFIX
implementation on middleboxes (such as firewalls, network address
translators, tunnel endpoints, packet classifiers, etc.).

I-D ACTION:draft-ietf-ipfix-reducing-redundancy-00.txt

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Flow Information Export Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Reducing redundancy in IPFIX and PSAMP reports
	Author(s)	: E. Boschi, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ipfix-reducing-redundancy-00.txt
	Pages : 37
	Date : 2006-9-6

This document describes a bandwidth saving method for exporting flow
or packet information using the IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX)
protocol. As the PSAMP protocol is based on IPFIX, these
considerations are valid for PSAMP exports as well.

This method works by separating information common to several flow
records from information specific to an individual flow record.
Common flow information is exported only once in a data record
defined by an option template, while the rest of the specific flow
information is associated with the common information via a unique
   identifier.

[IPFIX] IPFIX mailing list has moved

Hi all:

Following on from our Montreal meeting, new charter and new co-chairs,
we've moved the IPFIX list. It's now
   ipfix <at> ietf.org

At this point the archives are still at the old site, but we're
working on getting it moved!

Cheers, Nevil

The current archive needs to be purged still, it seems a lot of male (or
does that stuff do "positive" things for the ladies) body enhancement
advertisements got through before it got really activated ;)

[IPFIX] ipfix over TLS/DTLS

Hi all,

I submitted the ipfix over TLS/DTLS draft last two weeks. This document
describes the use of Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Datagram Transport
Layer Security (DTLS) to provide a secure communication for the transport of
IPFIX protocol. A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-yuzhi-ipfix-transport-tls-00.txt

Your comments are welcome.

Thanks,
Yuzhi

RE: [IPFIX] ipfix over TLS/DTLS

I think I would like to see a detailed section why IPSEC is not
considered as a suitable alternative for this application.
