TORCS does currently not support internationalization. It would be a nice thing
to have, if somebody could try (or tell me if you have already experience with
this) if gnu gettext and family work as well under Windows (without cygwin
environment, I assume FreeBSD and OSX should be now problem). Or can you point
me to other portable internationalization frameworks?

If this would work we need to solve as well the font problem, because the fonts
we use now cannot have all international fonts, so it would be desirable to use
fonts of the host system. This has in turn the risk that we choose fonts unlucky
and the application looks crappy.

Very nice so far.

This is a really bad idea. The system where you execute TORCS already knows the
users preferences, why allow to adjust it in TORCS at all? This is just bloat in
my oppinion.

Why this? What about replacing all language-dependent strings in the XML's with
a "key" (a human readable unique constant, e.g. TRACK_DESCRIPTION or
BERNIW_ROBOT_1_NAME) and fetching the correct string for the key (if the string
for the key is not found one could display the key itself)?

What do you think about it?

No the system does not "know" anything. I, like yourself I guess, work in  
different languages depending on what I am doing. I find nothing more  
irritating than a system that thinks it "knows" what I want.

If a multilanguage torcs is installed it seems a shame not be able to  
access the feature because it is preordained by some programmed preference  
sniffing. Let the user choose. May be some OS dependant language detection  
could set a default but I think the user should have access to the setting.

I think having a new menu for this is clutter as you say but it would be  
good to have a language option in one of the existing configuration pages.  
Perhaps at the same level as the graphics configuration. Likely done once  
for the users installation of torcs.

I dont immediately see the use of continent options. Surely just list the  
languages available. One list in an existing context would not clutter  
things

Nice to see torcs finally get some translations , it was a missing feature.

For 99% of the users this is exactly what is needed.

Other way round. I guess you would be really pissed if every of the hundreds off
applications you use must be set manually to the desired language. So TORCS
should just silently adapt to the current environment. I would at most allow a
command line switch to override this or a manually edited entry in an XML for
the geeks.

That's *exactly* what I suggested if you read my post. But with a readily  
available access to configure it if required.

Right, so everyone in the world who has to do some work in English as well  
as their native language is now a "geek" and we should make them jump  
through hoops to find out how to make use of the language option present  
in the software and make it as obscur as possible to change it. After all  
they're geeks they'll enjoy it.
